Thought I'd seen that picture before.... Not quite but it did remind me of this.
Caley 812s.jpg
Caley 812s.jpg (48.99 KiB) Viewed 3515 times

Caley Coaches kits, some with new turned chimneys and added extras. Two in OO, one in EM and one in P4 which is pictured on the Caley Coaches website.
Back in the day when I was still able to do these things in batches. :(

The 3D prints are fantastic though, what tenders are you doing to go with them?

Thanks, the 3000 Gallon one although may do more too.

Caley ones look good, especially in that primer.

CR 812 4mm Body Shells: I'm now ready to accept 3D print orders for those whom it may interest. :) Riveted and non riveted, also specify 00, EM or P4 as the cab splashers are set accordingly. Chassis and tenders are still in development but for now the bodies are available. Will finish off the 652 bodies too.

As a reminder: For those of you in various online places who have expressed confusion and wonderment as to why I set out to make the 812 when there is a brass kit and an RTR model coming along;

as said before, ultimately I want to build 4 of these so it's a lot cheaper for me to do my own, on top of that the plan has been in my mind for around a decade so it isn't anything new.

Further more, I can re-scale these up or down if there is any interest so from my perspective it makes perfect sense. :thumb

Note: Considering Dave Bradwell's view on the boiler bands I have reduced them to 0.1mm as seen in the photographs which although a tad over-scale still, are closer than what a lot were, previously at 0.2mm. Making them much smaller will likely render them mushy on the prints.

I'd limit portrayal to LMS or BR days as round headed rivets, dogs on the smokebox door, and lamp irons (other than on the top of the smokebox and cab sides) were not features in the Caley era.

Yeah I know, this is just a quick render to give an impression, not an attempt to show an accurate combination. You'll also see I didn't finish all the livery details for the same reason. A nice blue and white render looks better than boring black.

The body comes in riveted or non riveted form and there are 3 smokebox types; no lip, lip and lip with dogs as in the render.

Lamp irons are not modelled on the smokebox top as it'd foul the rivets for the printing tolerance thicknesses needed for a resin lamp iron. I'd expect these to be cut off and replaced by etches from most anyway.

I have swapped the safety valve and bunged a number on and painted it black. Again, just for a quick impression.

Thanks, Mike.

Apart from a few things I'm still part way designing will be taking a break from new stuff as I am bottle necked with a few half completed 3D print loco's on the desk. Built another HL gearbox today for one. (55 minutes, not bad) Must get them finished. Want some nice new shiny pics and loco's finished fully for the new layout/s. :)

Loft work is still slowly going forward in preparation for the next layouts although at a trickle, roof still leaking although we have almost sorted it.

As well as working on the 812 tender and other bits, also doing a few commissions,

Progress on the USA Scotty is coming along nicely, ultimately it is being done as the client wants a H0 model but it's agreed to release things in 4mm too.

3.5mm H0 Scotty is released.  4mm one following in a day or two once everything is uploaded.

On the Photon can print everything bar the loco bodies at around 50% of the price although I haven't yet calculated the costs exactly but roughly that.

Loco bodies are a Shapeways only purchase currently due to the Photon being a smaller machine.  Will be buying a 2nd one soon.

 4mm Versions released.

Caledonian 812 TENDERS now available in 4mm!

Photon 3D Prints for bodies are £32 + postage, chassis Shapeways only (FUD/SFDP) & there are double pack offers for the whole sets too, bit pricey though.

If this interests please share.

Those look smashing. Decent price here in Canada. I might grab a couple of the Midland wagons.

I got some photo's of the S scale prints in FUD/SFDP.

Printed some on the Photon too although I'm not entirely happy with the anoying line that insists on forming on these wagons when printed on Photon which is why for now they are just on Shapeways.

Will upload in 5 or so minutes.

This last one is also S scale but the one below is a Photon print that after a wee rub slapped some paint on.

Photon Prints, can't remember if 4mm or S although the results are almost identical, they turn out pretty good although they sometimes have an annoying line on the side that needs rubbing out. Happens a lot with large flat panels, not so bad if the panel is big but with plank detail a bit awkward. Can print them if it interests though.

Thanks. So it looks like you have patterning on the sides of the SW prints, but not so much on the ends? That's what I was expecting.

Cleaning up 3D prints in areas is fairly normal though. Until we get to injection moulded quality it'll be the norm.

Those pics are from 2018 so modern prints might be different now. It's the usual orientation factor no doubt.

It's the 3 plank that looks the worst there. Bit of a scrub would sort it.

As FXD/SFDP prints go these are some of the best I've seen.

What concerns you here?

I have to say that I am quite impressed with the results. The S scale wagons look particularly good, but the translucent material reminds me of some ancient ERG kits for LNER riveted mineral wagons that I once built and needed several layers of paint to hide the see through look.

Tony.

They also have a rather interesting Marzipan onk to them when new. :D

Regarding the 4 recently uploaded wagons, I've been talking in PM to Compound2632 on RMweb who's very kindly spend considerable time unearthing some extra information.  Based on that, with these two....

https://www.shapeways.com/product/PKHMJ ... 7&li=shops

https://www.shapeways.com/product/N5QUS ... 9&li=shops

I've added the following notes to the descriptions:

Notes: These 4mm ones have been altered slightly from the initial CADs in that the number plates always appear on the right hand side as you observe the wagon.  Some details had to be thickened slightly or left out entirely due to 3D printing tolerances and design choices of over-scale visibility when the commission was taking place.
Also some of the inside bolts that would be countersunk have been made as protrusions so there is at least some representation of visibility, feel free to file them off.
Normal concessions although feel free to view the CAD in the 3D viewer, top right of the images.

I agree that they came out very well for SFDP. I'm not criticising them. What I'm after is hints on whether it's now safe to model vehicles with vertical sides at SW, or whether they need to be flat-packed, as I've been assuming. I'm encouraged by your results, but I think it's a change in degree, not a complete change in process as the patterning can still just be seen.

Greetings all.

I'm hardly the first to do this and probably won't be the last, however, I've kindly been commissioned by someone to design the 04 Drewry Diesel to give the tram way variations.  As it's a loco I've always admired I didn't say no!  It is both for the usual conversion parts for a Bachmann RTR model and a full body shell.  Here then are some Tweets showing the current progress.

First test prints parts are plonked on the deck for effect, windows were too low at the front:
Image
Image

The corrected the windows, they may be a tad high now but will address things closer the end:
https://twitter.com/KnucklesSCC/status/ ... 4426620931

Image

Once done and ready there will be two cabs to choose from, one with slightly higher rear windows.

Side Plates and Cowcatchers...or Moo punchers as I like to call them.  Those bits are for conversions, then full bodyshells also.
https://twitter.com/KnucklesSCC/status/ ... 4392384512

Image
Image
Image

We're probably 90% there now, mostly needs more rivets, chimney, steps, hand rails finishing off, holes for hand rail pillars, front lamps, radiator grill, foot grips on running plate and a few other bits.   As I'm sure you can see though, not too much to do.

Early Class 04 had bonnet handrails in four sections, with a pillar at each end as the four sections were separate, corresponding to the doors, and with pillars no thicker than the handrails themselves. The first batch did not have the small handrail at the top of the radiator side, but did have a large vertical handrail on the radiator side, extending above and below the door louvres. Most of the others did have the small handrail, but it is higher up the bonnet than the main set, and may have been a later addition to the second batch.

The oblong front windows were only on the first batch, D2200-3 [11100-3], but these started with the exhaust level with the top of the bonnet, and later were given stovepipe exhausts. I don't think they ever carried the later tapered exhaust. There were examples in the second batch which carried skirts as well, and these did have tapered exhausts, but the cab front windows were extended downwards as with all later batches. The steps, both front and rear, had a solid backing on the first batch and only one with the cut-out in the front of the footplate ever carried skirts, and that quite late.

Class 04 are a bit of a nightmare to get right, as there are at least three cab versions, three different wheel diameters, two different radiator sizes, whistle or horn, two which did not have vacuum brake [both in the first batch, D2200/1, I think], at least three types of buffers [the first batch had round ones larger than later batches, while some at least of the second batch had what looks like a cropped version of the large round type], two different arrangements of bonnet handrails, two different front buffer beams [those on the first batch are the shallower type], footplates with and without front cut-outs, and possibly other differences.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I thought you would probably want to know now rather than later.
Regards
Noel

I see no rain, just extra info to help get things accurate. It's appreciated.

As I'm doing this as a commission I'll pass this information on and we can discuss things more.

I agree that getting every combination perfect can be awkward, is like that on every build though.
