Hi All
Been wiring today - but as an aside to the tedium that instills I did take a break to do a little more street furniture.
Before anyone asks - No you wont be able to see the backs from the front of the layout - I got carried away again!
Cheers

Hi all
I have for a while been meaning to model the large brackets the bridges of Hill St and Naviagation street sit on.
As I need 8 of them I thought it best to design a little etch.
The above shows the 2 parts assembled.
The completed bracket
And again, sat on a penny for scale.
Cheers

Hi All
most of my platform lamps are different in one way or another. Some have no extra bits, some have Phones, some HST stop signs and some loadspeakers or combinations of some/all
the one at the front of the layout has all 3 - makes a change for the complex one not the be hidden by something else! A little etch for the folding base thing!
Cheers

Jim,
As a matter of interest what program do you use to draw up your artwork for your etches.

Hi All
Sometimes things don't come out as you hoped. This was one occasion and it was regarding my efforts to model belisha beacons.
First effort is on the right and is a surface mount LED on top of 1mm metal tube. I had to open the orange bead up too much to fit over the LED. So pondering what plan B would be I had a eureka moment. On the right is simply fiber optic with the shielding removed. The optic inside is 1mm and its rigid enough to be the pole of the beacon. Its slightly flexible too so it should be OK if it gets a knock.
One lit, one not. In bright sunlight the real things are pretty hard to see flashing. I think the fiber optic gives the right level of light but it may dissapear on the layout.
Cheers

Hi All
Theres a lot of traffic lights at the Hill st/Navigation St Junction. Having found some reference pics of lights from the right era I have drawn up an etch for the heads.
The pic on the right shows the bear carcass. I thought about how to show the lights and came to the conclusion that if they changed and the traffic didnt move that would look odd. By making the turn from Navigation street to up Hill street green but by also blocking the route with a bus at the bus stop I can literally jam up the traffic. Thus giving a reason for the traffic to all be stationary.
Cheers

Hi All
Just to keep the thread vaguely on the topic of railways, a few shots of trains!
86252 arrives from the Wolverhapton direction.
There was some booked freight though New Street - Steel was the more common freight you might find. This is 56066 a detailed and repowered Mainline model
47433 is a detailed and repowered Lima model.
this is the first of my (eventual 4) class 310's and 312's. Its built from the Southern Pride Kit
By the era of the layout Derby had just the 1 class 120 left in service. The model is a craftsman conversion of the lima 117
Cheers

Hi All
Back to scenery then, starting with
Test fit of my bridge hinge mentioned earlier in the thread
mock up of the temporary bus stop - litter bin from S kits.
Another mock up - this time of the furniture I have been working on. Funny how clutter gives the scene a bit of life.
A fleetline is held at the lights. For those who know the area and the buses the driver is obviously lost!
Cheers

Hi All
A while back I took a few shots under the bridge which came out quite well. However the lack of point motors bugged me so I have redone them. Also with the extra bridge supports that I have only just done and a bit of clutter on the platform
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
I actually prefer the first two to the one with the loco in, not sure if its because of the lights on the 50 or just the angle.
The 2nd one is absolutely superb.

Jim, you know what I'm going to say next...
Get the high-res versions of those to me, and they'll be in RailExpress before you can say "Quinton Noine".
Superb work, as ever. I assume that they're wowing them over on RMWeb as well? I've not been over there tonight. Off the Moving Pictures (spot the ObPterry reference) to see The King's Speech. A pune, or play on words, in the title, and a superb movie as well. Highly recommended to the house.

Hi Craig
I am no fan of loco lights TBH. I have toned these down by only having them on for 3 seconds of a 15 second exposure but I think they are still too bright.

Hi All
One of the frustrations I am just having to live with is the lack of OLE in the layout pictures. You see once the OLE is in it makes getting to anything below it a bit of a nightmare, meaning that the layout has to be pretty much finished and fully tested before the OLE can be installed.
Thus shots of 'leccies' are always going to look a bit odd but this one came out not too bad.
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
I think most people had assumed that the 25KV wires would be among the last things to go in (I certainly had). It would make further work on the layout rather awkward if the wires were to be put in place at an earlier stage.
Where one sees electric stock with pantographs on a layout minus the wires, I would automatically assume that this is work in progress, and would think none the worse of the layout. After all, I imagine most of us are working on layouts which are still some way from being finished, and so are in no position throw stones.
I think Birmingham New Street (the prototype) is the absolute pits, and I hate it with a vengeance, but Birmingham New Street (the model) is a fantastic piece of model-making, and I look forward to further progress with great interest. The current absence of overhead wires doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks Martin
I havent found anyone yet who likes the real station (including myself) but in the 80s it was the hive of activity with loco changes seemingly on every train and pretty much anything likely to turn up.
I do think less than ideal places in the real world make for better models though.
Cheers

Jim,
I love the battered look to got on the little yellow tractor (if that's what they call it), are the BRUTs going to the same treatment
I remember them, in the 80's, on the central side of London Bridge in the early evening, with PO workers throwing post bags out on incoming 4SUBs while commuters waiting, impatiently, to get on and read their books and papers.

Hi Dave
People who know better than me refer to them as Tugs. The BRUTES will be similarily bashed about and like all things they come in differnet styles. For my era a fairly even mix of blue and red although I have pictures of some white ones too. The also come in half height and no sides at all versions. When I get round to them Shirescenes are going too be very happy people!
