Musical taste is a very personal thing and I've no idea what you might consider upbeat and if I did there's no reason to suppose that I'd agree. I was only able to stand about 3 seconds of what ever it was that Paul Willis posted and we're very good freinds.

I don't find Bach's Toccata and Fugue in any way funereal or downbeat, I find it inspiring and chose it for it's grandeur and drama and hopefully to emphasise the sheer scope of what has been assembled for everyone's enjoyment.

Some of the Scaleforum layout videos have a music track and some don't, people might like them, or they might not, but the music would have been the choice of whoever made the video.

Whatever else happens I hope that everyone who visits will have a great time.

Expressing my lack of IT knowledge! What does one have to do to get a 'live chat' facility... if I understand from forgoing paragraphs that individuals can have live chats with demonstraters etc?

Hi Dave,

I shall be asking all layout contributors, demonstrators etc to be available for at least half an hour, hopefully for more on the day. Once I have their timings I will be publishing a timetable of who will be available and by what means, when.

I'm expecting most interaction to be via the Forum. There will be a special section. So if for eg. a layout owner is timetabled to be available between 11:00 and 11:30 then people will be able to post messages and get a live response.

I don't think that it's reasonable to expect people to be tied to their computers all day which is why I'm asking them to let me know at what times they'll be available.

There may be other means. You may have seen that Jeremy Suter did a prctice run on YouTube, as he's planning to be available on a live feed most of the day and will answer questions about the Stores and his workshop activities.

People will also be able to e-mail me and as show organiser and other contributors while they are on duty and there may also be sone Zoom meetings although you'll have to e-mail me for details on the day. Small groups visiting the Society stand via Zoom for example may be possible.

Final details still to be worked out, and different people will, for personal reasons be available for different periods and in different ways, but you should be able to connect with most contributors at some time on the day.

Thanks for your reply. Seems simple enough having 'live' responses through this website. I will however get my great nephew to attempt to teach me what to do if a zoom facility is on the cards!

Just watched (and heard) the Scaleforum trailer.

I'm a dedicated classical music fan, but I couldn't help laughing. The opening passage from this Bach toccata is a favourite soundtrack for horror movies!

If you want a suggestion, how about the opening movement of Elgar's Enigma Variations? (Hackneyed maybe, but quintessentially English and upbeat.)

This reminds me of the original soundtrack for "Heckmondwike - the movie", dubbed for the film by the BBC (although the BBC was entirely unaware of this!) The music was "The Little Train of the Sierras" by Villa-Lobos. Very jaunty, but not exactly ee-bah-goom Yorkshire.

I'd suggest music that isn't pompous or arresting - actually totally unemotional music that doesn't actually say anything but gives a background suggesting constant movement and momentum, preferably busy and light, and just not noticeable. The old BTF films had just the right feel, the music seems to be specially composed and recorded like on this one https://youtu.be/eayD4H2oIqY
(though forget the opening, go to 9 minutes, that's the sort of thing I mean). That's not very helpful for this situation now but there's plenty of music that would do. Something not well known so you don't associate it with anything. Martinu for example or maybe a Bruckner symphony scherzo or even some less well known Mozart or Haydn, or in the light music vein Coates or ....how about this - perfect!

You'll have to reach your own judgement when you see my video next weekend, but as a film rookie indulging in a one-off exercise, it's actually quite difficult to find a piece of music that's (a) the right length, (b) free from charges and royalties and (c) not too intrusive on the video itself or the commentary. The last of these was quite important in my view. After all it's background that you're after, that fills in the gaps between sections of speech. You certainly don't want the viewer humming along with the music!

In the end, I found the whole process of filming and editing quite an enjoyable one, but it did keep me out of the workshop for quite a bit longer than expected!

It was suggested to me that I should create a trailer video for the show, I thought about it and did. It lasts for one minute and 28 seconds and isn't really of any importance. If people like it, fine, if they don't that's fine too. I really don't care whether anyone thinks I should have used different music or no music, made a different trailer or no trailer. It's there and it's made and I'm not changing it.

I'm organising the show, I made the video I chose the music. It works for me.

When someone else organises a virtual Scaleforum they can choose the music, or choose not to have any, I promise

What is important is that we have some great content lined up for you all, but any music in any of the layout videos is nothing to do with me, any music contained in them has been chosen by the person making the video. I don't mind if anyone wants to have a dig at me over my musical choices or taste, but please bear in mind that these layout videos have been produced by your fellow members for your entertainment under abnormal and difficult circumstances. So please be nice to them.

If you feel that these layout videos are going to offend your sensibilities I would suggest that you don't watch

Dear me, what a faff over music. Since this is a virtual show we all have control over volume or can mute according to taste. Much better than a live show that I exhibited at that had one layout playing the Corrie Street theme every 20 minutes or so for two whole days!

I for one want to thank Danny and all the others for going to all this trouble so that there can even be a show to distract us from these trying times. I am looking forward to this show. This will be my first Scalefourum as I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic for ease of access and have a thing about travelling in a flying Petrie dish under the best of circumstances. This avoids all complications, saves air fare and accommodation and the temptation to spend more than I can afford is eliminated.

A bit harsh, Danny. I, as you quoted , have already stated I will expect to have the sound off for anything I watch. I enjoy listening to music, but it has to be my choice of what and when. Having someone else's choice inflicted on me is annoying, especially if it distracts from the purpose of the video.

I was not referring to your trailer, which I have not watched, but to the more general discussion about music with the videos for the actual event. Musical accompaniments to TV and film are done by experts, but even they get it wrong sometimes, hence the complaints from time to time about TV dialogue being inaudible. Inappropriate music does not add to the experience, it detracts from it. So, why do we need music, anyway?

And folks, if you do choose to turn the volume off, you’ll miss any interesting comments that the layout owners make, you won’t be able to hear the demonstrators trying to help you or have any audio interaction there might be!
