Mysterious pyramid

Postby nberrington » Thu May 07, 2020 5:21 pm

In the photo below, outside the Swanage signal box there are three items:
1) a concrete ballast bin
2) a mysterious pyramid of whatchacallits
3) what looks like an ex LSWR platelayers trolley with the wheels standing separately.

I have a drawing of the cart (I believe by Mike King) in a recent Southwestern Newsletter.

What I have no clue about is the stack of ??? In the pyramid - are those chairs? Does anyone have a notion what that is?

Its a stack of chairs isn't it?

If you think about it, you can not stack them vertically on top of each other as they would rock off the top of the chair.

Mind you, there looks to be a £10 worth of Exactoscale chairs in the stack!

I concur, a pile of chairs.

A place I spent my childhood at - just outside Combe Down tunnel (on the S&D) had a pile of chairs stacked behind the plate layer's hut.

Lots of interesting stuff in that photograph. Weighted detector on the connections to the turnout, and what looks like a special traffic set in the background that includes at least one Ironclad (?Diagram 213 Brake Third). But the really interesting vehicle is the one in the foreground: it appears to be Lancing's one-off cut and shut of a SER First and Third on a custom underframe that eventually became all-Third no.1050 and did duty as a spare on various Western Section branches including the Swanage line. I guess the vehicle to which it is attached, largely out of sight behind the signal box, is one of the Maunsell rebuilds of LSW stock onto a standard Southern underframe, but I'm not sure about that one.

Oh yes, and there's a stack of chairs too.

...and item 4, the pile this side of the trolley wheels?

Let's do this properly!

Neil, Swanage is coming along a treat; hugely inspirational!

My immediate thought was the site of an early performance by the KLF...
