Hi Ivan, are you still on about the MPG???? What is it these days 70,80 even 90? I've forgone the economy of the Jetta and invested in a Seat Ateca SUV for a bit more room, used it for the tradestand to Scalefour North and got 57 mpg so not bad for a new car with all the new emission controls. Same 2.0Ltr Tdi as the Jetta but as aerodynamic at a Dutch barn..... :P

I managed 70mpg to and from Camarthenshire on my recent holiday. Quite surprised to see that it was possible to do South West Wales and back on half a tank.

Also managed 72mpg to ExpoEM Bracknell. :thumb

Just a bump to say RAILEX is this weekend. Good quality layouts and probably one of the best shows for specialist traders too.

Yep diesels are brilliant aren't they..... Cough!
Did Railex a number of years ago with the layout 'Alloa', a great time was had by all and a great show for all the small traders. ;)

Wasn't that were we caught you having a nap behind the layout. I seem to remember us of the Triumvirate Old Timers had been up all night as Aylesbury was hosting a live music festival so we just felt duty bound to visit all the venues in addition to the main event. >?)

Seems packed today. Difficult to get a spot to view anything at the moment.

Mike and Judith Edge have some very interesting plans for the months and years ahead. Am hoping they might produce scratchbuilder etches for the Gresley V4 and Robinson 8K chassis. They have an S1 0-8-4T on display; very impressive.

The queue for the café is much longer than last year, and the café appears to have reduced the number of chairs and tables available. Still, at least people are actually getting food, which is more than can be said for the Great ExpoEM Catering Disaster last weekend.....

They already produce scratch builder etches for the Gresley V4, I purchased a set a few years back.

As shows go, that wasn't bad at all. Anyone who likes DCC gimmicks should see New Kensal Green, where there's plenty of visible steam and smoke from engine chimneys. The next challenge will be to make it look like it's coming from the cylinder drain cocks.

Yes, but you've got the version with errors in it. They told me they were correcting the mistakes for the next run.

I've filmed steam coming from drain cocks many times on my older layout, requires a disco smoke machine, aquarium pipes to reduce diameter and a drill to turn your layout into a collander. Got vids if interested.

So what were the highlights? I will no doubt spend a bit of time in the next few weeks checking it out on Youtube. I have found it is a good way to see some of these exhibitions with out needing to be there... and the models on my big TV really show how things have been done.

Good day out, some interesting layouts.

One thing I noticed was that the overhead lighting was turned down (compared with other shows in the same venue). This made looking at the layouts much easier, though the traders were a bit in the dark.

Tim,

I believe that the venue is now managed by Serco, who have a policy of not replacing failed lighting units. It was noticeably dim on Friday evening during set up without layouts and trader lighting to add some brightness.

The lighting levels were poor - a number of units were not working and even more were on reduced luminosity. This did make looking at things more difficult and people had to go to doors and daylight to see some items properly. As layouts had their own lighting, viewing them was not an issue but overall, the poor light did make things more difficult.

For me this year, it wasn't the layouts. It was the 2mm Scale Association demo table. Even though my varifocals proved almost useless at getting close up....which worries me if I'm going to return to prolonged building sessions. Everyone says I should also use one of Anglepoise-style magnifying glasses, but I haven't got space for more clutter on the table.

I found Leysdown unexpectedly compelling. Normally, I don't get much from these minimal-BLT layouts, but Leysdown had enough variety of movement and just enough sense of place (flat, coastal, population density tends to zero) to grab me. For me, the sound effects were a big plus. Also, it worked flawlessly while I watched.

I had a good day watching trains at Railex yesterday. This has become a finescale show to rival the single scale societies exhibitions. More than 3/4 of the models were up to the best standard in their scale and and ranged from 2mm FS to Scaleseven. Many I saw were as good as P4 but bigger or smaller.

It was great to see so many 7mm layouts which ran well, were beautifully sceniced and with decent backscenes. A great improvement over the last decade or so. Many 7mm modellers have now achieved good weathering too...at last!

My observation on several 7mm layouts was the tendency to run trains too slowly. Yes, its good to see slow, smooth movements but prototype running round and station departures were not usually so leisurely.

Now that 7mm models are so good I find myself working hard to find an imperfection so now lay down a challenge to them:
When shunting, bunker first, at least one of the crew should face the direction of travel. Surely in the senior scale there is room for a little mechanism to rotate a bod?

I look forward to seeing this in action next year!

I have put this same posting on RMWeb to get more exposure to the 7mm moidellers out there.

I didn't explain myself properly.

I preferred the stadium lighting turned down, it was better. I thought it was a feature!

Railway modelling is an art form, art galleries have their lighting turned down, throwing emphasis onto the object.

And there was me thinking it had been done deliberately!

Perhaps those doing demo's at Scaleform had better remember to bring their own lighting?

Should do anyway, so one doesn't have to rely on the hall lighting.

I agree with Paul. Some layouts shunted or ran round far too slowly, and creeping about the place spoiled the illusion for me. Also sound effects not matching in any way the motion of many of the (steam) engines, but we've been there before. Constant chuffing to a stop, that sort of thing. The exception to this was Leysdown, where everything sound and motion wise was as it should be - as it usually does.

As usual, a very good day out.

Philip
