Back home after a great weekend. About to go crash out on the bed I expect and start the recovery process. Worth it though!

Bought most of what I wanted, some stuff from the bring and buy that will be helpful and a few other things.

Thanks to all those who came by the DEMU stand to chat and have a look thanks. The stand was pretty busy most of the weekend which was nice to see.

Finally, thanks to the organising team for another great show.

Thanks to everyone who came to look at "Brunswick Yard". I really enjoyed chatting with everyone and sharing experiences. This was its first outing at an exhibition and the kind comments I received really underlined the friendliness of the event and the society. Thank you to Terry for the invite and the opportunity to fly the flag for D&E modelling in P4.

I'll deal with my impressions of S4um proper in a separate post but if I may I should like to say something about the social fringe.

As the de-facto front man of the Saturday night "Millwrights gang", as Bernie so diplomatically put it, I should like to thnk all who contributed to the evening. I am sure that the four of us at the table in the corner would have enjoyed ourselves, and necked just as much beer, if no-one else had joined us. That there were more than just us made all the difference. I am prepared to have another go next year. However, to attract a larger gathering more people need to know about it. Telepathy is a proven failure and, useful though the Forum undoubtedly is, there are those who do not read it, shock horror. I should hate to think that some would have loved to join us if only they had known.

The Friday night gathering at the Hop Pole has grown from an initiative by David Lane wearing his Railex hat. I attended this year for the first time. Although there were several people there that I had met before there were several that I had not and it is with regret that I say that I still do not know who some of them were. What is it about our make-up that inhibits us from introducing ourselves in a social situation? I should like to see this event given official sanction and mention made of it in the show guide so that all may join in. The case for this is strengthened by the arrival of a party, clearly composed of distinguished guests, escorted by a member of the Committee and later joined by others. It would have been nice for the mere mortals to be introduced to the distinguished guests and vice versa but this is Aylesbury, not Utopia.

May I record my public thanks to Terry and all the organising team for the customary great weekend. From my point of view, slaving behind a hot camera, it was very enjoyable despite the pressures of having to produce some half decent pictures for us to remember the event by. I was rewarded this year by the privilege of photographing some quite superb models from the showcase. Possibly some of the best ever (discounting my own, of course, I could not possibly comment on them).

Despite the atrocious weather on Sunday morning (I have some great pictures of the car park guys dripping out there) there seemed to be a fair gathering in the hall, and we were blessed with sunshine when it came to closing down time, so my drive back was pleasant as well.

Terry, many thanks. We all owe you for your efforts.

I have to say Chris that I find your perspective on events at the Hop Pole on Friday evening, rather odd, but this perhaps says more about our differing personalities than anything else.

The 'distinguished guests' were the exhibitors of Flintfied: Vincent de Bode, Peter and Ria van der Kooij and Claud Moinier, who had come over from the Netherlands. The reason that I (the committee member in question) was looking after them was because I have known them for many years; there was nothing 'official' about it at all, just common courtesy to good friends. I had told them what I was planning to do socially at Scaleforum and invited them to join me, it was as simple as that.

You ask "What is it about our make-up that inhibits us from introducing ourselves in a social situation?" and then point out that you yourself managed to do exactly that, expecting to be introduced "It would have been nice for the mere mortals to be introduced to the distinguished guests and vice versa". Vincent and Co may well be people that you would like to be introduced to, but you know me pretty well, I sat with you for a while, talked with you and you only needed to ask. I don't see it as my 'job' to make sure that everyone is introduced to everyone else. Equally if Vincent, Peter, Ria and Claud had wished to be introduced to people that they didn't know they too only needed to ask. In actual fact they were all pretty tired after setting off early from the Netherlands on Friday morning.

It is true that I am a Committee member and so whilst at Scaleforum in an official capacity I work for my keep, but once out of the show itself and away from my 'job' on a Friday and Saturday evening I consider myself to be a member of the Society out for a few beers and something to eat and being the kind of person who likes to sort things out for myself, I make my own arrangements.

Going to a pub for a few beers doesn't need to be made official, I do it every year, I make sure that my closest friends know what I'm planning and I don't really mind who else comes along and who doesn't, but as it's a good pub and a popular venue I expect to see other Society members there. Not suffering from shyness, I talk to whoever I want to and I'm generally likely to find many people that I know as well as making the acquaintance of people that I haven't met before, but being human I find that I can only talk to one or two people at a time. If I had to spend the evenings after a show 'officially' making sure that everyone else was having a good time I'd resign: please be aware that I go to Scaleforum for my own individual pleasure too.

I also (nothing 'official' about it at all) arrange a dinner on the Saturday night. I do this as Danny Cockling not as a Scalefour Society Committee member. In life in general I tend to enjoy the intimacy of a relatively small number of people for dinner, but I know a lot of people, so it tends to end up with a larger number that I would ideally like, this year eighteen sat down to dinner and this is about as large a number as it can comfortably be, or be accomodated at the venues that I use, so it won't be made 'official' and it won't be expanded beyond whoever I choose to invite.

I commend your efforts to create for yourself and others the social event that you want to enjoy, as this is exactly what I do and I believe that it is up to each individual to make the things that they want to happen happen and not rely on other people to 'officially' do things for them.

Regards
Danny

In case it may assist the owners, the green spectacle case and the computer memory stick (blue and silver in colour) were left by two different visitors on my table demonstrating the 'Burford' auto-coupling. I waited in the hope that their respective owners would return to claim them, but then handed them in to the Society stand when (after an hour or so) neither of the owners had turned up to reclaim them.

Hi Chris

Socialising is part of my, and many others’, Scaleforum weekend experience whether it’s before, during or after the “main” event.

I have exhibited at shows where there is a “formal” gathering for exhibitors organised and, whilst it’s not compulsory to attend, I have often joined in, meeting and making new friends along the way.

As I explained to you at the weekend, there is no “formal” gathering organised as part of Scaleforum. I think the organisers do more than enough work to manage and facilitate the actual exhibition without having to arrange other people’s socialising don’t you? Many regular weekenders seem to successfully make their own arrangements, often as part of an Area Group celebration, so I’m not convinced that the work required to arrange a large scale formal organised “do” would be justified or that the “volunteer” to do it would be found!

I wasn’t aware that a Friday night gathering at the Hop Pole had grown from an initiative by David Lane wearing his Railex hat? I, along with some of my friends, choose to go to the Hop Pole because we like it there. We often find other like minded souls there and happily engage with them, if they want us to of course, as was the case this year.

I commend your efforts as a “social secretary” this year and am pleased to hear that your Saturday evening was enjoyable. Perhaps you would consider producing a “social guide” and submit it to the Forum and Scalefour News to assist attendees in choosing suitable places to eat, drink and be merry next year? You could consider acting as a contact again as it seemed to have been successful for you this year?

Best wishes

Steve

Thanks to everyone who came and chatted with me on my Chassis Demo. I hope I was able to assist with any problems that were discussed. Personally I enjoyed the experience and the weekend as a whole but I didn't get that much time to view the show in detail but what I saw was good. Many thanks to Terry and all persons involved with the running of the show.

The Millwrights was OK by me, very nice (Cheese) Sausage and Mash (they were vegetarian. I hadn't read the menu properly!) and the beer was very good. Company was excellent, Chris's knowledge of retro popular music was extraordinary! I don't think model railways was mentioned hardly all evening.

I've been asked to repeat the Chassis Demo. at S4North next April so anyone who missed out has another opportunity to ask me awkward questions.

Provided they're about loco chassis........................

I had a most enjoyable day on Saturday. An early start meant I was able to relax with a stadium breakfast before taking advantage of 15 minutes earlier entry. Not sure what to do first I headed to the bring and buy - not open until 10.45 I was told - only it was because on my return at 10.44 (arena clock) the scrummage had begun. Still, I 'wormed' my way in and eventually left with a pile of vital items (well that's what I told Mrs S later.) Between entry and taking up the position of 'hooker for the barbars' I made my way to see Ian Johnson and his layout Tredethy Wharf making it's Scaleforum debut. I have followed Ian's progress on his blog 'Grogley Junction' as he has developed his P4 modelling over the last few years and it was a pleasure to see the thing for real. Seeing the work of another relative newbie displayed is very encouraging. Ian's team on the day included Gordon L and Graham K who I totally mistook for one another. Well they're look so similar.

Next to Tredethy was another of my target layouts - Flintfields - which although an exhibition worthy I had never seen before. I was quite interested to see the jigsaw approach to scenery so I took a surreptitious squint underneath, behind and so forth. With limited width in my 'railway parlour' the concept of add on modules is one I am exploring - should I ever get to exhibit whatever it is I end up making.

Although I have picked out Tredethy and Flintfields as the two layouts which I specifically wanted to see I was also very taken with Cadhay Sidings and Lower Rose Goods and I think that the Wantage Tramway layout on the Bristol group's stand - already showing some lovely buildings - looks to have huge promise. (Bit of common theme here - rural backwaters)

I was really pleased to see that several layouts had tall backscenes extending above my eyeline at least and I was impressed with the idea of using a continuous roll of material which avoids the need for vertical joins (within limits.)

The 'engineering' side of the hobby is of less interest to me than the scenery, design and historical elements but I am very pleased that Exactoscale has re-emerged as a separate business and that all being well the 'OO' fasttrack will remain in the range (I'm sure I am not the only S4 member with an enduring investment in the narrower gauge.) This leaves the gentleman who now runs C&L to concentrate on only one range which I am sure will be easier for him. The 3D print of his new track base looked very good.

All in all a good day out. Rather than post photos here I've loaded some onto Flickr - mainly scenery (no apology). Here's the link:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/richardjs ... 0147312301

I know events take some organising (I've done it.) So a big thanks to all those - organisers, stewards, traders, exhibitors, all who made this such a good day.

Now I've recovered enough to sit at a computer the task of photo editing has started, though with a large backlog as I've not done the photo editing since Warley last year! oops! should have them done by the end of the week as I've nothing much planned between now and the Wigan show at least.

Both myself and Natalie have come away inspired by the show and have come up with a way to do an idea we've had involving London Transport/Lillie Bridge Depot that is manageable and workable alongside working on the Harton and Eversley layouts. Although some of the things my brain came up with left us both in fits of laughter (amazing what exhaustion and morphine will do...), don't ask Natalie about sideways panniers as she's liable to fall over laughing...

I was in Paris at an event in an old Metro station. The tracks were still there and one platform the outside bar.

Now I'm home, a little research shows it has not been a station since 1934, but trains ran through in the 1980's on excursions.

Who won best layout?

I entered my vote in but had to leave before closing time and I'm unsure if it was published anywhere.

Great day though.

Luckily, as Editor, I was writing the results down!
Scaleforum Competitions
There are four completions at Scaleforum, results were:
● The MRJ Chalice was awarded to a whole layout – Kerrinhead
● The Eileen’s Emporium award went to the broad gauge trackwork on Paul Townsend’s Dartmouth
● The Unsung Hero award was to Andrew Jukes and the Exactoscale crew
● The Ken York Trophy (awarded to, in the opinion of the visitors, the most entertaining layout) was awarded to Flintfield, with Kerrinhead runner up, and Cadhay Siding third.

It was because of the lack of competition announcements post exhibitions, I made a point of noting down - at the time - the winners.
