Dapol Class 68 conversion

Postby CaptainTony » Wed Jan 10, 2018 2:16 pm

The Dapol Class 68 model uses stub axles. These run in brass bearings and connect to a plastic central gear.
Obviously not going to be an easy conversion. I was going to use either Ultrascale or Steam Era metal 14mm wheels. These use a 2mm axle.
The Dapol axle measures out at 0.095", which I think equates to a 3/32" axle. In mm terms, I measured it as 2.4mm.
So, I'm thinking shouldered axles - no 3/32'-2.0mm shouldered axle available, but there is the EMGS 2.5mm-2.0mm shouldered axle available.
So the question is: if I ream out the bearings from 2.4 to 2.5mm and do the same for the gear, do you think this might work?
Are there any other thoughts.
I do not have access to a lathe and no skills in that department so it needs to be relatively simple.
I have often thought that what we need is someone who could offer a turning down, reprofiling service. All of my Dapol and now DJM awaiting conversion could be easily converted in this way.

Hi Tony,

I've had success using a 2mm ID, 2.5mm OD sleeve for the gear loctited to a 2mm axle, saves altering the bearings.

Thanks Simon,
I've seen these but they come in different metals. What did you use or recommend? Steel, brass, aluminium, etc? from Eileen's?

Might the split conversion wheels for Bachmann EMUs that Branchlines work for this? I can't recall the diameter however of the stub axles.

The Branchlines wheels are on a nominal 2mm axle (mine measured at 1.95mm) and the turned down section is 1.52mm. They are shown on the Dapol 121 conversion post.

I tried the sleeving method as mentioned before but have a slight wobble. I have been advised that the step down axles from the EMGS work fine so in the process of getting some of them.
Just need to figure out how to get the gear off the sleeved axle without damaging it as I fixed it on with Loctite 603

You might try the method in this post: https://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/t746043p1/
