Buildings for Buxton
Hi,
I have many questions about many buildings, but the current one is for the Midland station building.
A friend has offered to at least draw out the building to scale and possibly to make it for me, the difficulty is that we have no photographs of the outside front. We have details of both ends and the platform side, but despite that the number of photographs taken of the trains and stations the front seems to have been missed unless you know different, please get in touch if you can help.
Regards, Tony.

Hi Tony,
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "front", but think you mean the bit that faces away from the railway? I would call that the back?? To me the front is the bit that faces the LNWR station, though I suppose some would say it is the ornate end similar to the LNW station!
I am assuming you have seen all these books, but list them just in case you haven't):
Through Limestone Hills - Bill Hudson.
There were 2 Foxline "Scenes from the Past" books:
2 Buxton - J.M. Bentley
7 Buxton to Bakewell, Matlock and Ambergate - J.M. Bentley
There are other books, but they deal with the LNW line from Stockport.
In No 7, there is an E. R. Morten photo (No 21) looking towards the station from beyond the signal box, as well as many others. There is also a photo (no 1) showing that side c1880, but that is before the Midland extended the station at that side to include covered carriage.
All the best,
Kevin

I assumed that you meant the two gable ends and the view actually from the platform inside. The pictures I have uploaded show the entrance frontage I think. I have a few of the opposite side but these primarily show the shed building alongside the main station building.

Just thought I would load the other images I have of Buxton for the sake of completeness ... I assume many of the you will already have (if not all). Plus some more currently on e-bay

Tony,
I presume you're aware that Jeremy Suter now holds many of the negatives of the late Buxton photographer E R Morten. There may be something in his lists that fits the bill. I've been using his photos as reference material for years, and they really are excellent.
I hope you manage to find a suitable home for your 'magnum opus' (with house attached of course!). I don't however envy you the task of moving it!
Regards,
Geraint

Re: Buildings for Buxton
Hi,
Thanks to Tim, Kevin and Geraint.
I have all the images posted and the books, and I have asked Jeremy, unfortunately he cannot help.
The part of the building I am looking for is from the station approach looking square on at the building, where a pedestrian would enter under the canopy, which can be seen in the first image that Tim posted. I have a floor plan for the building and we can sort of guess the architectural style, but I don't want to guess if we can find a photograph.
I have also tried the County archive, but with no result.
Thanks, Tony.

Tony,
I assume you have also been in contact with Glynn Waite at the Rowsley Association?

Hi Tim,
No I have not, but I will now, I was in contact with a member and also indirectly with the Midland Railway Society, I will try them direct, thanks for the idea.

Tony,
A long shot, but I recall that in times past the Buxton Advertiser produced the occasional supplement on railway matters. Maybe they have a photo library?

Geraint

The only other avenues I can think of at the moment would be the archivist at Peak Rail (Mick Bond) and if you haven't already the Michael King collection.

Hi,
Thanks Tim and Gariant, I have just emailed the Buxton Advertiser and Peak Rail. I can't find a reference to Michael King anywhere, can you find a link or website? Thanks again for the ideas.

Tony,
I came across the following images of Buxton station on the Britain from the air web site. You may already have them, but in case not I have screen grabbed them from the site, enlarged as much as I can.
Regards
Tim

Re: Buildings for Buxton
Hi Tim,
Thanks, I had seen some of those before, it looks like they may have added more images. All useful stuff, I am still looking for the illusive front view of the Midland building. I will be visiting Buxton again in the Spring as I now have a contact on the museum staff.
Regards,
Tony.
