Larkrail

Postby David B » Thu Jul 06, 2017 3:22 pm

I have heard that Larkrail is on Saturday 15th July. Is this correct? Are there any details anywhere because I can't find any. Anyone know anything about this?

Simon Castens certainly thinks it will be on 15th July and he should know! See https://en-gb.facebook.com/The-Titfield-Thunderbolt-Bookshop-182766075097753/. Presumably will be at New Oriel Hall as usual, just up the road from the Titfield Thunderbolt.

Tim,

Could you scan the poster and stick it up on this thread? For the help of other who may be tempted...

I've had this in my diary for some months now. I'm hoping to be over to Bath after the Saturday morning parkrun is out of the way.

Cheers

Thank you, Tim. I would like to come but I have already accepted an invitation to Yeovil MRG's open day at Martock. I might be pushing it to get to both.

For any of you who don't know the hall, it has a complex internal layout, so you may need to explore a little, or ask, to ensure you don't miss anything. It all depends on how much of it Simon is actually using this year...

Damn...moving the daughter out of Bromsgrove and into Kiddiminster. One of the most relaxed venues with a seriously good pub just down the road!

Larkrail is on of those idiosyncratic shows, it appears.

However by dint of a little searching, I found this on the Titfield site;

"Attractions booked include Robin Gay's utterly fabulous "Wantage" masterpiece, Roger Bird's beautiful and unpronouncable diorama, local shrinking violet Steve Parkes slice of Wellow in 2mm scale, Tim Tinknell's Highland essay and more. In the small but perfectly formed trade department Justin Newitt returns and Alan and Modelu make a very welcome first appearance, so come dressed up for a scan!"

So I hope to see some of you there. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing how Robin's model of Wantage has progressed.

You won't be disappointed Paul!

The 'mass adjournment' afterwards to The Larkhall Inn next door is always most convivial. It's a bit 'spit and sawdust' but it does have a big beer garden.

Copied from Simon Casten's post on RMW:

Larkrail 2017

Saturday 15th July 2017, 10.00am to 4.30pm

£4.00 admission to all comers, accompanied children free.

New Oriel Hall
Larkhall
Bath
1.5 miles out from bus and railway stations, bus No 7 from outside Debenhams in front of Bath Spa station.

Robin Gay's P4 Wantage station and Nic De Courtais' EM model of Wantage lower yard spearhead a fairly Wantage-ish show which will also hopefully see the launch of Nic’s new book on the subject from Wild Swan.

Roger Bird’s beautifully observed Tralee and Dingle diorama, Annascaul

Llanfair: Welsh Narrow Gauge from Andy Cundick

Portskerra: Highland Railway terminus circa 1916 EM by Tim Tinknell

Drews Sidings: RMweb featured Br Blue inglenook OO from Adrian Full

Demonstrators

Iain Rice will be in attendance with something jolly interesting.
Phil Copplestone will be representing S scale
Simon De Souza: Wantage Stock and plastikard modelling
Justin Newitt: fiendishly clever wagon etchings
Gordon Ashton: P4 wagon building
Ted Olney: OO kit building
Dennis Lepper figure painting, plus two G1 locos painted in full glorious Southern Maunsell livery
Dave Easto: Larger scale scratchbuilding, American boxcab
Steve Harrod: Weathered G1 diesels and new OO project
Laurie Griffin: locomotives and miniatures
Steve Parks: Wellow diorama in N
Jonathan Persse: Larger scale structure scratchbuilding
Jerry Clifford and or John Greenwood: smallscale wonderfullness
David Whitcomb and the Festiniog Railway roadshow

Trade

Dave Simpson's Gas Cupboard

Brian Osborn's Branchlines

And Alan Buttler’s ingenious ModelU come to Bath for the first time.

I think that's it, it all seems to fit in, I must have forgotten something….

As before profits go to Julian House, a locally based charity supporting the homeless, last year's event raised £600.00

and finally, Roger Swan’s ode to 2016:

At The Larkrail Train Show
Let us not speak for the love
we share for these trainsets:
Let us drink Tea and look.
She, checking watch: eating cake
Tapping foot:
He, acquiring another Railway Book.
And both, Puzzled for a moment,
In this Larkhall Inglenook

Just paid the Titfield Thunderbolt book shop a visit and enjoyed a cup of coffee and a chat with Simon Castens.

The bad news is that due to lack of time Simon is not able to organise Larkrail this year, so will not take place.

See Simon's anouncement in the book shop's main page:

That's a pity, oh well, maybe a Cameo version next year?

Well, 'next year' has come and gone a few times since the last posting. Am I correct in saying that it's all systems go this year?

Very friendly little show and hopefully the decent pub just up the road is still up and running. Very tempted to travel north over the border into Somerset.

Hi Roy,

Yes, chatting with Simon Castens at the Bristol Show, it's all booked and such. I've just had a look for publicity details, and I can't find much specific. There's the usual rambling in-joke heavy topic on RMWeb, but even there I can't find much.

As long as you have the date - 23 July - then I'm sure that more will become clear nearer the date :-)

Cheers
Paul

Thanks John. I'd missed that in the middle of all of the posts about cake.

Great news. Hopefully the RMT won't be striking that day on SWR & GWR. I'll put it on the calendar.

Jerry is gradually posting details of layouts attending etc. on that RMWeb thread.

And what should be (E&OE) the full list here: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/topic/167992-larkrail-2022/page/2/#comment-4818135

The pictures that Jerry is posting of the layouts attending are superb. This really looks like one not to miss for anyone within striking distance of Bath. I personally foresee a looooong time pondering some of those. And I must get a shopping list together for Branchlines, as he's one of the few traders that doesn't have an internet presence these days.

When I resurrected this thread a few days ago I was reasonably optimistic that this year's show would go ahead. Simon told me late last year that he was hoping to put it on again this summer. I did see that there was chatter about it on RMWeb but that is a medium I don't generally use having been subjected to a load of abuse some years ago. Not having seen Larkrail advertised elsewhere, I just thought it needed a bit of a push in the right direction.

The hobby as we know it with exhibitions, group meetings and social gatherings has been through a bad time over the past two years. We should all be thankful that some semblance of normality is returning.

Looking forward to meeting up with old mates again in Bath and at the AGM next month.

Last time I went, I loved it. Great show with some superb modeling. Not to mention the pub down the road! :D
Can't wait, this is a show I've really missed.

Hope to catch up with some familiar faces. It's been far too long!

Ditto to Mike - adding that my only visit (so far) proved it as amongst the friendliest modelling gatherings I have ever attended, apart from the superb quality of the modelling. I have been sorry in recent years that covid has kept it off the agenda, and am now pondering whether a visit can be engineered this year on the back of family commitments down south. We shall see. That is a splendid line up that Simon and Jerry have arranged, after all.

Dunno about 'local to Bath', guys; from Sheffield it was well worth an extra trip south. From Richmond (no, not the local one), 90 miles further north, it looks no less attractive.

Have a really Fun Day Out, all, even if I don't make the date.

Steve
