Scaleforum 2016

Postby Terry Bendall » Sun Sep 06, 2015 2:11 pm

Just under two weeks to go to Scaleforum 2015 so it is time to announce the dates for Scaleforum 2016 which will be on September 24th/25th 2016 and the event will at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury. One or two things planned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Society and the 50th anniversary of the introduction of P4 standards and a number of layouts in the frame but not yet confirmed.

I was wondering whether there will be advance tickets this year. In previous years, IIRC, they have gone on sale on 1st July.

Advanced tickets will be available this year but I am afraid that we are a little later with them than usual due to pressures of other things on those that do the job - i.e Danny and myself. :( Sorry. They will be coming soon.

I've just marked the ticket page live, so advance tickets are now available.

Members will have seen the preview in recent Scalefour News, and I'll endeavour to get some more details of the show on the website shortly, so that it's more obvious what you can buy advance tickets for :-)

I have just followed the link above and purchased and printed my Scaleforum ticket, but note that it is headed Scaleforum 2015 and the dates are shown as 19th and 20th September. Have I made an error or is the website incorrect. Either way, I hope that the guardians of the door will let me in at 10.15 a.m. on Saturday 24th September and again on the next day. It is a long way to travel to be refused entry.

Oops. It appears I forgot to update a piece of the website.

I'll fix that later, and let you know - I suspect you can simply reprint your ticket.

either way, the door staff will be expecting you!

Ok, so I think I should now have fixed that. I believe the changes were to the ticket template, so I suspect you can simply reprint the ticket from the same link. Let me know if that works, and I will contact all the other purchasers who bought tickets before today.

Sorry for the confusion.

Good to know David. See you in September!

I've just updated the website, and I now have the summary information that members will have seen in Scalefour News 197.

The eagle eyed will spot a couple of changes. Firstly, as announced elsewhere, the Bring and Buy will be present. Secondly, Brian Harrap will not be exhibiting a new layout. Doubtless he will be back another year.

My eagle eye has spotted that we are still showing Dave Barrett's contribution as 'Chiseldon' and not 'Cirencester' as reported some weeks ago.

Might I please ask if the P4 Risborough Club test track will be there? Just thinking about whether to pack a few chassis that need a gallop ......

Sorry the test track will not be there this year. Due to the need to fit in everything else, including the Ouse Valley layout there was not sufficient room. If the locos are to P4 standards then you may be able to get a test run over Balcombe Viaduct if the owners agree.

Possibly using the Ouse Valley and the Balcombe Viaduct as a test will indeed be some test. Many years ago, I rebuilt a Jamieson Schools to EM and took it to the ExpoEM when Roy Jackson exhibited Retford for one of its very few public outings. We latched it on to some nine carriages and sent it around a few times. After about four scale miles I found out how not to fix a return crank onto a driving axle....

I have posted the list of traders to the show page. I spotted a couple of typos as I went, so I've also edited Terry's posting above, to fix up a couple of the web addresses.

It looks like I'm going to need to do find overnight accommodation for this year's Scaleforum. Are there any recommendations either in Aylesbury or the surrounding areas. I'm sure there has been plenty of experience here over the past few years with either Scaleforum or Railex.

Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Chris

I, and I know others, have stayed in the Aylesbury Travelodge for the past two Scaleforums. They seem to have realised that's there's something going on this particular weekend and adjusted the prices accordingly at this late notice.
Currently they are quoting around £90 for a room on the Saturday night.

Might be worth checking out the hotel booking websites as well?

This is a selection of hotels and guest houses in and around Aylesbury is given below. We have no personal knowledge of any of these hotels and inclusion on this list cannot be taken as any recommendation. It was last checked a couple of years ago so some details may have changed but it may be useful. The Premier Inn chain has a number of hotels in the Milton Keynes area and others that are around Watford, both of which are about 45 minutes away and it is worth checking their web site. Ok, thanks for advising. I'll probably put a couple of chassis in a box and hope someone can give them a test run as I only have a short straight test track.

The Scaleforum advert in MRJ no.249 which turned up today is still showing Chiseldon. Presumably too late to alter before copy date? Poor Dave must be getting right confused as to which layout to take.

We regret to announce that the fine model of the Ouse Valley Viaduct and the nearby Balcombe Station will not now be appearing at Scaleforum 2016. The layout is the work of two people, Rod Cameron and John Farmer and for various very good reasons, which it is not appropriate to make public, they have been unable to make as much progress as they thought. Unfortunately the news that the layout would not be able to come came just too late for the exhibition guide which has gone to press.

Filling the space, and nearly as big will be the test track built by the Devon Riviera Area Group - DRAG to their friends, so we will now have the facility for test runs. The test track has three circuits built to P4 standards and one for OO and has the facility for DC and DCC control so there will still be the opportunity to test run that loco or even a prototypical length train at scale speed. The Society is very grateful to members of DRAG for being willing to fill the gap.

We apologise for any disappointment that this may cause and the layout has been re-booked for 2018. There will of course be many examples of fine modelling to see elsewhere within the exhibition
