...seconded!

I never thought that there would be so much interest in grass...it was non-stop all day! Thanks Phil for the invitation. A great day!

Thoroughly enjoyed the day, a big thank you to all those who helped put it on. Learnt a lot, had more than a few laughs and made some new acquaintances.

Same again in 2017?

There hasn't been this much interest in grass since some US states legalised it.... :P
That would be an ecumenical matter.

I'd like to echo Danny's thanks. It was, for me, a worthwhile event, although I did not succeed in seeing every demonstrator on my 'shopping list'. Only in late afternoon was there room at some of the tables and this must be one indicator of the event's success. Would so many people have attended if there had been an admission charge? Who knows.

I hope that the two sponsoring Societies will feel able to collaborate again.

Chris

I found it well worth the trip across, and would like to add my thanks for the organisation and hard work on the day by all concerned.

Thinking about it afterwards, it is a difficult concept to beat. The only addition I could think of was a trade stall, so that once you've had a few conversations and realised that to move your model forward you need a left handed monkey wrench, it would be useful if there was somewhere on site to procure it! However, there are so many little gadgets and gizmos that help that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to cover all the bases without effectively turning it into another S4um type event (Northern, or EM, versions are available ;-) ). Especially if the one stop shop is also expected to be selling teddybear fur...

As I say, I thought it was a brilliant event, and dont think my above comment is easy to answer - but thought I'd post it fwiw, it most certainly is not a criticism.

It was well worth the trek up from Plymouth, but I found that it was difficult too get anywhere near the machine demonstrators for it to be useful and Rod Cameron got dragged away, to shift his car when I got to his demo.

I look forward to another one if it's within reasonable travelling distance, Ewell was just about the limit of endurance from down here.

Yes I'm sorry about that Phil, it was pretty full on all day although it was a bit quieter near the end but maybe you couldn't stay that long.

(Having to move my car was not because I had parked where I shouldn't - quite the opposite, just that unbeknownst to the organisers the Church minibus parked at the back of the car park needed to be extricated in the middle of the day and a number of participants had to move in sequence to let it out).

I know it wasn't your fault and you and a few others were under the cosh, with not much of an opportunity for a comfort break let alone a lunch break. Something that the organisers might look at if there is another skills day.

Thanks all for your time and effort.

Phil.

It was a busy day, but really we had no idea how many visitors we would have. The Chris Kedgley Skills Day that Peter and I organised last year was successful, but only drew 47 visitors. We thought we might get a few more than 100, but that was just a guess. When the first cars started to arrive from Tolworth Station with 8 or more from each train, we realised that it might get quite busy, and so it proved; we eventually passed the 200 mark and we were still counting at 3.30pm!

It was, as Rod says, a great surprise when the Church minibus had to be moved, but although it took a while, it was accomplished with good humour all round.

To answer a couple of comments: All the demonstrators were kept busy, which was nice is some ways but a shame in others! However, I gather that Vincent and Mick will be repeating their machine tool demonstration at ExpoEM in May so there is another chance for people to see them. And we deliberately chose not to have any trade nor any society stands as that would have reduced space for the topics we wanted demonstrators to cover. It was a different kind of event and we would like to think the concept could have a future.

It has been very gratifying to read all the nice comments on here so thanks to you all. Don't hold your breath about another one just yet, at least from us three, for we would like to build our own railways sometime! We would like to see another joint event sometime, especially since this seems to been so well received. But there is to be another Chris Kedgley Skills Day next year in Rochdale, at about the same time of year, so we hope all those from the North who couldn't make it to 101 will be able to visit that.

Thanks to all once again.

I shall also be doing a machine tools demonstration at Scalefour North with the machines in operation and demonstrations of what can be done and how to do it. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to try for themselves - as long as the queue does not get too long. :D The Scalefour North guide in the latest News gives an outline of what will be covered but anyone who is coming and wants to see something in particular is invited to send me a private message so that I can be prepared.

Thanks for the info of another one in Rochdale, all one needs is enough pre publicity too be able to book the train and a hotel, as Rochdale is a bit much for a return car journey from down here.

Yes, thanks Tony for the information.
Pity it is not on the EMGS website too.
