Thanks for that Dave. It's something I was wondering. The model represents D5000 in later life not as built due to the extra bodyside grill at the number 2 end. The first few didn't have this when built but some got it later.

I think that d5000 got hers when she went to the southern, she also picked up extra headcode brackets I believe. You can see them in this picture

Do you know if SLW are doing both types of sandbox? Those got switched arround too and some locos ended up with different ones at each end. It would be nice if those were available as a spare part.

A Hall Sensor is a small electronic component that responds to a magnetic field, in this case to detect small magnets buried in the ballast and initiate a response from the sound chip, eg flange squeal or horn.

Mornin' Jim,

I'm light on knowledge for the allocation history/date of mods etc for D5000 so can't answer your queries. Similar with the sandboxes but I'll pass on any information that comes to light on same.

Anyone know of a way to do Athermos axleboxes on 24s? I'd thought of cutting something on the Silhouette if I had a decent sketch.

The correct Athermos box is one of the features of these new models so you don't need to make your own. Image

Aft'noon all,

The RMWeb thread on the SLW 24 has now been viewed around 35,000 times, received over 500 replies and extends over 21 pages. More and more readers are becoming aware of the numerous detail differences within even the hundred plus disc headcode fitted examples.

It isn't easy to find 2 identical disc headcode 24s so If you want a topical Christmas challenge then how about trying to find a matching pair from historic images of the prototype. Close up images of all debatable areas will need to be linked/referenced.

Detail differences include: axlebox type, boiler water tank fitted/unfitted, modified size of underslung tank arrangement (SR based examples), livery, radiator grille type, 2nd compressor/cab front air pipe, brackets on the cab front, roof blanking plates, miniature snow ploughs fitted (2 or 3 parts...middle missing on some), sandbox type, footstep blanking plates, loco number position, D prefix, cab front doors, cab front damage above coupling hook, boiler compartment grille covers and colour, OHLE flashes, additional bodyside grille, loco numbers on each corner of the body, yellow warning panel size & shape inc. whether it extends around the buffer shanks etc, BR double arrow position, quantity and size etc

Here is an example....pre TOPS number on BR blue, later style numerals with miniature snow ploughs from a currently unknown photographer. Try finding a second image of this arrangement, let alone a second similarly attired loco....

I'm still trying to find a picture of D5000 that matches the model. :) I can't even find one that has the numbers that high up!

You missed lower valances and the small grill above the cab doors (which incidentally the real 24081 didn't have but the model does!) also there's variation in the boiler steps blanking plates.

Indeed it is. D5000 had the numbers low down so the bottom of the number lines up with the bottom of the radiator grill. The model has them higher up like a normal green 24. It's no hassle to renumber D5000 with the numbers in the right place but moving the works plate down too might be a bit of a faff. It would all depend on if the works plate comes off without scarring the bodywork I suppose.

Mornin' all,

For me the body profile of the new SLW model is the single biggest advance towards a P4 standard RTR loco.

Modern Locomotives Illustrated No 177 Class 24 & 25 contains all necessary images/diagrams for comparison purposes

Compare the SLW roof/beading line over the cab front windows/roof outline/window shapes and sizes to the most recent Bachmann version on the right. The proportions of the Bachmann cab front are thrown out by the incorrect height of bodyside. The unsightly joint between body and chassis is missing on the SLW variant....

There is no mistaking the fidelity of the SLW model around the battery boxes/underslung tank/bodyside grille area...

Now, don't get me wrong, as and when the Tyne Dock version comes along, I will be buying a few of these but a friend of mine has just received 24081 and has posted some photos on Flickr, and, if I'm honest, I'm really disappointed with the paint finish on the noses:

Amongst other things, the yellow paint is very thin in a number of places, there appear to be sanding marks below one of the handrails at one end and there are at least three hairs trapped in the paint...

I appreciate that this could be a one off but if I'd paid £200+ for this particular example, I'd be sending it back...

I thought this would have been mentioned here by now but as it hasn't I'll just mention that it does seem SLW do respond to feedback as a much finer and closer to scale radiator grill was reported to have been on display at the recent York show.
