Re: Warley 2015
Looks like I'm going to have to be on my best behaviour all weekend!
(That's the corner of Wheal Elizabeth's fiddle yard in the right)
Although maybe there'll be a few strange things running on the layout?

Nice morning in Birmingham.
Just arrived in hall 5 in the NEC and putting the final touches to the Society stand ready to welcome all visitors.
In very good company with Burntisland, Pwllheli and Wheal Elizabeth in P4 as well as the Society stand.

Reason: To restore gravitational normality (turned the pictures up the right way)

Blimey, it's the wrong way up - do I need to bring grappling hooks?

Doesn't look anything like as busy as the last (and only) time I visited - is everyone recovering from Black Friday?

Re: Warley 2015
There's definitely a bug somewhere, but I'm not exactly sure where.
In the mean time, I will find out for real tomorrow - as a last minute substitution I will be behind the stand tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting anyone who drops by!

I went for the first and last time last year. The fact that they chose to use such a small part of the hall and cram everyone into such a small space did not sit well with me and I managed less than 30 minutes before leaving.
I accept that some exhibitions are purely commercial- such as the excellent Warners ones, others are run purely voluntarily by organisations such as EMGS and S4 as well as countless local shows each year. Then there are those that sit between the two...
I wonder whether it is possible that trying to reduce costs/ increase profits by using such a small space might in fact have lost money due to reduced attendance. A well attended show is a good thing for all- organisers, traders, exhibitors and the hobby as a whole; but I cannot have been the only person last year to have found the density of people per square yard being off putting.
Re: Warley 2015
I think that the NEC charge by the area used; had the whole hall been used, the costs and presumably the entrance charge would have gone up proportionately. Having said that, I've been a few times to the show and not really enjoyed it. I think the size and the number of exhibits is beyond my capacity to cope with; I always seemed to miss seeing some of the layouts.
Incidentally, the first time I looked at this thread on my iPad, the photos were the right way up. Now they've been edited, they're upside down!

Re: Warley 2015
Thanks for that Steve.
I was aware of that already, thanks.
EDIT: I have removed the rest of my comments. Life is too short to discuss the pros and cons of the warley show.

You never know, Derek, it might turn out to be like motorways: the more you build the more people use them and the more space you have the more people fill it...

Re: Warley 2015
Maybe Noel,
Or perhaps like a train. Normally 8 carriages but is changed to 4 carriages to save money. For a little while their profits are immense- same revenue for half the cost.
But then over time less people use the train and the revenue falls. One day the directors note that they no longer need a 4 car train, but a 2 car train instead. Then a bubble car. etc.
I run a business where I have to be very careful about a very similar scenario and I know that due to inertia I could make an unpopular change and it would maybe take years to become a serious problem, but careful analysis would show in fact it started happening much earlier. (and I am NOT saying this IS happening with warl3y)

Not bad. I liked the HST on the timber trestle.
No children or women in any of the shots, so a bit one-sided.

Re: Warley 2015
Hello all
This is my first post, although I joined a few months back. I visited Warley yesterday (Saturday) and had a really good and informative chat to a gentleman on the society stand, I now clearly know the difference between compensated and sprung chassis, moved forward a great step in my learning curve.
For me the show was a success as I picked up everything I was after. I now posses 10m of track, gauges, sleepers, etc etc, and the offer to send things not available post free allowed me to spend on items that weren't even there...
Not sure I'll be a frequent poster, but I wanted to express my thanks to the guys on the society stand.
Regards
Pete

Our neighbors are Wheal Elizabeth this year. It seems popular.
