Re-wheeling RTR rolling stock

Postby JinglingGeordie » Tue Sep 15, 2015 7:00 pm

I seem to remember from the distant past reading a review on some kind of double ended drill bit which allowed the user to drill out the plastic of a bogie or chassis enough to insert a brass bearing. Does anybody know what I am talking about or is it a figment of my imagination? Jingling Geordie

The tool definitely exists! I have just tried searching, to no avail, but it is not a figment of your imagination!

Thank you for help. Unfortunately, I will not be at Scalefourum (400 miles is a long way) but I will check with some in my group.

NB. The truck tuner tool does not drill out the bearing to take a brass pinpoint, it just cleans up the existing pinpoint, whether plastic or brass, although not usually required for brass bearings.

I wonder if you are thinking of Bob Paynes RTR Wagon Drill, once sold by Alan Gibson. This has shown as - SOLD OUT - for some time.

Intrigued to know if there really are 2 versions, as indicated on WM's website - both for 26mm axles, so where is the difference between 'HO' and 'OO, P4 & EM'? Micro-Mark themselves only advertise one, noting it is 'for HO standard gauge only'. However, they do say it drills (reams?) bearings to the NMRA standard of 60° - could the P4 version produce a different angle (68.47°, perhaps)?

They both have the same micro-mark part number, same goes for the gear puller, I suspect its just a result of Wizards keyword system so that a search of either H0 or 00 items will find it.

If you're not bothered about using bearings, there's the Ultrascale 26mm axle bearing drilling jig, available from them free of charge.

See: http://www.clag.org.uk/pinpointdriller.html and https://www.ultrascale.com/eshop/products/view/CAT013/79

I have successfully fitted bearings by placing them over the existing depression and heating with an 18 watt soldering iron. This will soften the plastic and the bearing can then be pushed down with the tip of the soldering iron, then hold it in place with the end of a screwdriver until the plastic cools.

Normally a 99% success rate.

I have just found out that the Ultrascale gadget is no longer available.
