Metric Nuts and Bolts

Postby jayell » Wed Oct 08, 2014 9:32 pm

John has mentioned that 8BA nuts and bolts are now available from the stores. This made me wonder what small metric nuts and bolt are available since I no longer have BA taps & dies but do have small metric ones.

Finding anything metric under M3 proved to be difficult, I thought an obvious source would be Eileens Emporium but very litlle to be found there, to cut a long story short the best place turns out to be in a fairly logical place to find metric stuff, France ;)

take a look at this URL
http://www.micro-modele.fr/index.php?op ... 17&lang=en
and it is even (partially) in English. The site says:
"We are specialized in micro-screws from M1 to M10 for industry, model making, research institutes, school department...Screws smaller than 2mm are high standard factory-made products (they are not thread rolling screws, unless indicated)"

all prices are of course in euros plus a standard shipping charge of 10 euros and it looks like payment via Paypal might be preferred.

I wonder if anyone supplies M0.5 screws / bolts, as this is the size used in Exactoscale screw couplings and, if you accidentally snap one, buying replacements could be difficult.....
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Currently though they only offer screws in stainless steel which doesn't solder easily so I was looking for somewhere to get brass stuff. I did find one item, a 5 pack of M4 grub screws with dog point @£0.95, that is of interest as spares for my C1 lathe in their listing though.

I have bookmarked a couple more sites:
http://www.ba-bolts.co.uk/
http://www.pollymodelengineering.co.uk/ mostly model steam stuff but their catalogue (downloadable pdf) does list some small metric stuff.

and this is the source I started from which lists mostly US suppliers:

Scale hardware does seem to be the only source of sub M1.5 stuff but is of course in the US and their highish quoted shipping rate of $6 is to be expected.

At least the French modelling site offers English for the main subject pages, this one is much more difficult for someone whose current fluency in the language consists of "ein bier, bitte" and "danke" I can't even remember what "how much" translates as. Essential phrases for anyone serving in the RAF in Germany in the 1950s :thumb

Suppose "sprechen sie english bette" was not much help...? ( Most usually did - especially if they wanted to sell you something ! ;)

You could view the website through google translate.

Knupfer in english

However I found that the e-commerce facility will not work when vieiwing the website this way. The solution is to view through two windows. One in english to identify the parts you want and one german to select and place your order. Service is very good and they will supply the goods with an invoice for payment after delivery.

Cheers...Morgan

Thanks for that link, they certainly have some interesting stuff.

I have used google translate for text ranging from odd words to paragraphs and page sized docs but didn't know it was possible to use it to translate something as big as this catalogue.

It does mean though that we now have quite a few possible suppliers for small sized metric nuts, bolts and studding in brass and steel. I haven't done detailed price comparisons but it doesn't look as though those of us using metric will be hard done by compared to imperial stuff.

HSS BA taps and dies are very expensive, even for 'chinese made' ones so in theory the bigger market for metric tools should make them cheaper in the long run. This is the main reason I have decided not to use imperial threads as even though I still have plenty of BA, Whitworth and UNF nuts and bolts lying about I no longer have any taps or dies to suit them.

I can recommend another German supplier of metric screws, nuts, numerous parts and material.

They are called GHW-Modellbauversand and one of their internet addresses is: http://www.modellbauschraube.de. I first met them at the Friedrichshafen exhibition generally held at the beginning of November. Plenty of people selling useful tools, materials and parts never seen at UK exhibitions.

I have been a customer for over 10 years and have no other connection. They are based in Niederkrüchten near to the border between Germany and Holland so within day-trip distance from Dover. They have a nice industrial unit in their local business park, just behind Aldi.

The website is all in German but the boss of the company speaks reasonable English. I have also bought from Knupfer from time to time - GHW is very competitive but it probably depends on what you want.

M2 studding seems good value and I use a lot, but GHW do M1.4, M1.2 and M1.0 studding (at a price). It is delightful but so far I haven't actually used what I bought.

As a starter for 10, Messing is the German word for Brass.

MacKays of Cambridge used to sell metric fasteners down to M2 over the counter. I haven't bought any recently so I don't know what they stock nowadays.
