Demonstrations

Preparing Artwork for Laser Cutting: Tim Horn
Laser cutters are now accessible to many modellers and their use has the potential to avoid hours of tedious and repetitive work. However, as with any computer-controlled tool, the end result is only as good as the input provided. Tim will demonstrate how he achieves stunning results when modelling brick build buildings and the techniques can easily be applied to many other types of model.

Modelling the Permanent Way: Howard Bolton
At Scalefour North last year, Howard showed how he models point rodding and interlocking. Interest his exquisite trackwork was just as high and, by popular demand, he has agreed to return this year and explain how he goes about creating models of permanent way formations.

Hands-on Weathering: Tim Shackleton
Weathering models is now recognised as a distinct branch of the hobby. However, many modellers are apprehensive at the prospect of spoiling a factory finish. Using his extensive experience of weathering techniques, Tim will encourage visitors to have a go with their own items of rolling stock. Bring along one of your models and learn from a master of the art!

Rolling Stock Construction: Dave Bywater & Geoff Allen
Cleveland MRC are involved in an ambitious project to build a P4 model of the famous Skinningrove Zig-Zag railway for the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum. Dave and Geoff will demonstrate the construction of rolling stock to be used on this model based on research into the history and operation of the prototype.

Historic Locomotive Building: Jim Summers
As one of the Burntisland team, Jim knows a thing or two about the modelling of historic locomotives from the 1880s. He will be sharing some of his techniques for researching and constructing models of locomotives from this era.

Modelling with Machine Tools: Vincent Worthington & Mick Moore
P4 modelling is often described as the preserve of model engineers in 4mm scale. Whilst this is an exaggeration, and many members are very successful without recourse to heavy engineering, no-one can deny that using machine tools is simply good fun! Mick and Vincent will show how they produce useful jigs and other modelling aids using their lathe and milling machine.

Almost the entire Bristol Group will be wending the 200 miles to Wakefield, I'm sure some members will be travelling further, looks like Edinburgh's about 200 miles North of Wakefield....

The Scalefour North 2014 showguide is now available for download. Compared to the print version delivered with News 186, this includes two new pages showing the hall plan, so that you don't miss any of the attractions, and more detailed information about getting to the show by road, rail or bus. All of the guide has been updated to include web links to further information about the exhibits and traders, and Google maps directions for driving from the M1 junction 41 or walking from Wakefield Westgate station.

If you are planning to arrive at one of the Wakefield stations, remember that there is a Wakefield Free City Bus (I know, in Yorkshire!) that picks up at both Kirkgate and Westgate, and sets down at the bus station. From the bus station it is a very short walk to Scalefour North, or service 110 stops even closer.

I'm also pleased to announce that RT Models will be attending Scalefour North. Unfortunately, the L&Y Society will not be able to attend.

A mere 310 from Angus.... But an East Coast first class ticket makes for a very comfortable journey.

As usual, the bring and buy will be at Scalefour North, as noted in the guide floor plan. I mention it here because it's apparently commonplace to forget it also runs 'up north.

If you've ever witnessed the hordes descending at 10:00:01 on the Saturday morning then you'll know that the Bring & Buy is a very popular part of Scalefour North.

It's more likely that those who know about the excellent bargains to be had keep quiet about it ;)

With Scalefour North now just a few days away, would anyone who would like a name badge for the event please make yourself known via an email to badge4scale4north@scalefour.org by 8.00pm BST on Monday 7th April.

After this time I won't be able to print any more badges for the show, but a supply of crayons, sticky labels and round-nose scissors will be available on the Society stand under the watchful eye of Mr Cockling.

Another wee bump to whet your appetites...

I have arranged to sell a collections of kits for a former Society member at Scalefour North this year. The results of several hours of logging, tagging and counting can be seen below. All will be available on the Bring & Buy stand at the weekend.

KitsForSaleScalefourNorth2014.jpg

These are priced to sell - not eBay silly prices.

Most are NER and LNER subjects - D&S, Owen Lancaster, Steve Barnfield, 51L, Nucast, Pocket Money Kits, etc.

Please don't ask for anything to be reserved in advance - I simply don't have the time to sort through the three big boxes full of kits.

What you don't experience from this picture is Witch of the Moor's reaction when she thought that I'd spent her monthly shoe budget on this lot :D

With that lot in the bring and buy I can see that the good folks who are in charge will need some large people on duty to control the queue, and perhaps some cattle prods to assist. :D Will we see an even larger surge of visitors than usual on the Saturday morning just to get hold of those D&S kits? Of course the rest of the show is an even better reason for coming. :D

I think a number of us will on our way up there from deepest Surrey, but I suppose I could lay a spurious claim to be one of those to have travelled the furthest as we are returning from New Zealand (in the lounge at Sydney airport as I write this) in time to get to Wakefield. Jet lag permitting that is....

D&S kits do seem to be emerging from the woodwork of late. I know of a number of similar 'kit mountains' and the demographics of our society mean that they may well appear on the market sooner rather than later! Indeed I would suggest that the majority of the kits produced over the last 30 to 40 years in 4mm scale have yet to be built! I predict quite a scrum at Wakefield on Saturday morning and most certainly concur with the hope that all those kits do not end up on ebay!

Attached is a photo of two LNER horseboxes built recently from D&S kits and finished in post WW2 condition for a client. They produce lovely models but are very time consuming! Of course, having got rid of my website recently, if you are interested in something similar please contact me.

I hope we'll be able to get through the crowds at the Bring and Buy to start serving!!

Please note that it will be difficult to check any goods in for at least an hour once the show has opened on Saturday morning. And anybody caught deliberately collapsing the scrum will receive 10minutes in the sin-bin! :D

I notice the WOTM's post of the 6th April has been repeated on RMweb and has already caused frothing and drooling from several non S4 Society members.

As I may be stuck behind a certain trade stand and not have the opportunity to gorge myself at this feast of rare(ish) kits as much as some others, I shall be setting mines and mantraps around the B&B stand to get rid of the unworthy.

I think Jol might be onto something here.

OK I will put my hand up that I would like a NER clerestory comp or all 3rd. But being on this side of the earth makes it neigh on impossible to get hold of a kit. There does seem to be a little bit of "superannuation" style kit collection by large numbers of "modellers" though this should be collectors or even investors. Personally I want the kit to be built to complete a train I am aiming for. I am still interested if there are others with the kits out there :thumb

I know what James has written above that the kits are aimed at sale to "modellers" but the profiteers will be aiming to get their grubby mitts on them which is a shame as they will end up in dust cupboards only to be realised when they are short of cash. The number of people who build, and would continue to build the kits if they were freely available again, miss out on their aims for the lovely experience of producing a unique piece of rolling stock from these lovely kits.

I admit that my size would help with the crowd control... After 3 years ago where I was being nice... I may not be in September!

Perhaps it should be that no one can but anything from the Bring N Buy for at least 1hr after the show opens, giving time for the stock to have at least the chance to be available to the most amount of members as possible, thereby the profiteers gain no advantage. It I think would be a fair way to deal with the bring & buy generally, not just the forthcoming one. How about it Committee and S4North organizers...

It's a fair point, Trevor, but where should I draw the line without someone feeling disadvantaged?

What about people who can only attend on Sunday? Whose train is late? Whose shift finishes at 12.00?

Like Steve Hall before me, and despite what you might read in other places, I will do what I can to prevent unfair advantage in access to the Bring & Buy at Scalefour North. Tony and his team do a magnificent job in running the stand every year. They know what works and I just make sure that they have the facilities to do it.

By the way, this collection has been stored in Australia for a few years. Some of the boxes look as though they have been nibbled by beasties. I haven't opened all of the boxes to check for black widow spiders and the like. Caveat emptor!

Perhaps you should check the boxes; consider the headlines next week, if a nasty bug escapes and poisons a child...
