Vectis Group

Postby stevecarr » Fri Jan 03, 2014 12:55 pm

Hello Everyone.

This is the first posting for our new 'official' group. We have been meeting on Tuesday afternoons for some time now but sort of fell into the notion that it might be a good thing to make ourselves 'right and proper.' So, after a few words of encouragement from the excellent Danny at Scalefourum- here we go!

We are, by name, as follows.

Chris Longley - long time society member - possessor of a wealth of historical railway knowledge - past associate with John Palmer and others on 'Burnham' - owner and exhibitor of 'Mere' - and owner and exhibitor of his current layout 'New Mere.'

Ian Hollis - Owner and exhibitor of Alkam - an inspirational EM layout which has won many prizes and friends on trips around the circuit. Ian is an accomplished modeller. One of his claims to fame is the custom built trailer for the layout which, providing the exhibition site is on the ground floor, can be wheeled directly to the allocated space for offloading and erection. A great timesaver - every layout should have one!

Bill Wyatt Millington - who's hectic lifestyle leaves him little time for modelling but who's organisational and admin skills are invaluable to the IOW Group and others besides.

Steve Carr - who wrongfully supposed that retirement would give him more time for modelling but nevertheless has found that working in P4 is the bees knees!

We are all members of the IOW Modelling Group and are hoping that space may be found in the club room for us to build a P4 layout, plans for which are afoot and more of which.

Any visitors to the Island are very welcome to get in touch and any new recruits are always welcome.

I forgot to mention that we are at the Southampton show on the 26/27th January - so if you want to meet the 'over seas mob' then that's the place.

The Society stand will also be at the Southampton show, with Mike Ainsworth, Mark Tatlow and myself in attendence.

See you there.

We took New Mere to the Southampton Exhibition and had a very enjoyable weekend. Problems on Friday with Ians trailer, (rear lights not working), meant a swift change of plan. Chris's Berlingo was pressed into action and the layout, personal luggage, and Chris,Ian, and Steve squeezed in and set off. If nothing else we took up less room on the ferry!

At the exhibition venue we met up with our country member John Palmer who had come up from Burnham by train. After setting up we made our way to our guest house which was situated next to a "Gastro Pub!" Fortunately this turned out to be better than its title may suggest and served us with, if not exciting, then acceptable food. Well kept real ale was a bonus mark. Unlike a lot of the modern lager houses they have learnt not to serve ice cold bitter!

New Mere ran well all weekend and received many kind comments from the punters. I overheard one gentleman tell his young grandson that he remembered travelling by train from the station! He is not the first to imagine that NM really did exist.

It is worth mentioning that John Palmers activity with the shunting pole met with keen observance from many of the visitors!

Ian, more used to AJ's than three links, began to feel more comfortable with coupling/uncoupling by the time we departed on Sunday.

I would add some pictures this report but have'nt mastered how to move them across from my pc!

It depends.

Is the IOM an S4Soc member free zone?

In which case not only do we recognise the IOM but we bow to their superiority in membership numbers!
