ultrascale conversion kit for the Dapol Western?

Postby jim s-w » Sun Feb 03, 2013 2:32 pm

Hi all,

From another forum and replicated here with permission

"Mornin' all,

David Rodgers is trying to 'get a handle' on interest levels in wheelset conversion packs for the new Western. If you wish for a pack to become available in your gauge then click on the link below and follow David's instructions

http://www.ultrascale.com/node/37

I will be sending one of my Westerns to David for evaluation once they arrive.

Cheers

Dave"

Just to add to Jim's update...as of Friday there was me and a n other who'd expressed an interest in this model. As David Rogers said in his email, if you don't ask you don't get. So please add your names...

Standing at 7 for the 18.83 list as I added my 1 set request. So that's 22 to go. Hopefully we'll get there but I would suggest that this message needs a broader audience as there were no entries for OO or EM when I looked.

Added mine for a P4 set. Thanks for the tip-off Jim.

I'd recommend committing to buy a set even if you're not immediately going to buy a Dapol Western. The thing is, you might buy one later on........
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Chaps

Does anyone know if the axles are the same for the Bachman Western as for the Dapol? If they are I am interested in three sets.

Regards,

CHRIS

Are Bachmann getting in on the "Western" act as well :?:

Hi,
Could've sworn it was "Heljan"

Of course it's Heljan! Bachmann haven't done a Western...

Anyway, the count is now at 15/30 for P4, now that I've added my 'expression of interest', so we're half way there already!

Based on what Dapol have done on their releases so far, I doubt it will be the same 2mm axle diameter that Heljan used on their western. Though if it is that model you have, of course Ultrascale already produce drop in wheels for it.

If I do end up splashing out on a dapol model I suspect that I would likely try and reuse the ultrascales I already have for a Heljan one...

Still well short of the required number as of today at 09:00 hrs. If you want these conversion sets to be taken seriously then you must register your interest.
Promise that's the end of my drum banging - honest!

Go on Rich - flog the Heljan Ultrascales and support the War Effort and 'express your interest' in some for the Dapol model! We all need to pull together on this one! ;) :D

I've put my name down for a set, even though I don't even have the engine - and have no intention of buying one until long after the hype and fuss have died down.

It'll probably take five to six months for a set to be produced anyway, same as for other wheel orders.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Well, we're at 24 out of 30 now, so it's more important than ever to get those last half dozen names! ;)

... showed interest, not "ordered"!. But I'll order the ones I expressed an interest in as soon as they're a "goer"

Only about 0.63 of a mill at the line though...

Well, someone had to say it ;-)

I thought that recent RTR wheels can now be used on EM and only longer axles need to be obtained?

This depends on the manufacturer. Hornby wheels are generally fine enough in the flange profile to be used this way but a touch too deep; however, this may or may not be an issue depending on the track you use. SMP and copper clad will accept them, C&L and Exactoscale will not - the flanges will catch on the chairs.

Bachmann are a little too thick in the flange, and so too are the Dapol wheels on the Sentinel, so if the Western is the same...

By far the best solution for EM, and the only solution for P4, is either a new wheel to the recommended profile, or turning them down yourself.

Ultrascale report that they have completed their tests, and are now ready to produce:

Do note that you must keep your "Western wheels" order entirely separate from any other order for Ultrascale parts.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

I'm in!!

Plus ordered the actual loco from Hattons: would be irony if I had the wheels before the locomotive!!

No, it would be nickel-silvery.

In my case, that's quite likely, as I had no plans at all to have a Dapol "Western" until well after the fuss and hype had died down. So it will probably be bought next year.
That would be an ecumenical matter.
