Re: Next! LNWR building
Hi All
More progress on my building. Its now a box and is starting to feel like a proper model.
class 86 for scale.
on the prototype there is some clumsy concrete added to 1 end, I have replicated this with squadron filler.
Clumsy I know and I wont be adding brick courses to the small vertical walls. The reason why not is the model will be 3ft 3 inches from the front of the layout and will be visible through the bridge. in this instance the treatment of the corners is OK with me, if the building was right at the front of the layout I would have done all of the corners with my mount cutter. Even so significant corners such as the main ones will be done with the mount cutter for neatness.
Cheers

Re: Next! LNWR building
The beauty of this building, or rather its construction, is that I can use both of my construction methods in 1 structure. To start with a descision needs to be made if the building is predominantly brick/wood/metal or glass. If its mostly the fomer then I use foamboard as I have for the lower section shown so far. If I decide it has enough glass then the building is made from clear perspex with detail overlaid. It pays - especially with the window frames to colour them the correct colour first. Luckily in this instance they are white. The plan is stuck to the back of the perspex to save marking out. In this case the frames are 30x15 thou strip laid edge on.

Hi All
Best laid plans…
The plan for today was to finish the panelling for the upper floor but I ran out of 15x30 thou strip! Oh well plenty more to be getting on with! The end walls have gained their surface texture and stairs while the beams that support the roof are now in. A bit more refinement around the windows and the basic structure of the upper floor is now done. Couldn't resist a little mock up or 2!
The funny little door is now done
View from the wolves end.
View from the other end, Gives a good impression of how the finished building will look I think.
Cheers

Thanks Nick
Had a play at doing roofing felt. The method is a single sheet of Tissue stuck down with double sided tape. This was then scored to represent different sheets and sprayed using Chris Nevards method of primer followed with a light dusting of black. Pretty pleased with the result so far, needs weathering yet though
Cheers

That looks excellent. When you say "tissue" do you mean tissue paper that you'd buy from an art shop of for wrapping presents, or tissue you would blow your nose on?
I'm wondering if that might work for a platform or road surface, maybe sealed with Johnson's Klear.

Hi Nick
Tissue as in Kleenex - just 1 py. I think the dusting paint method on its own will be fine for tarmac.
Cheers

Hi All
Been busying myself with the little shed I found on platform one. Makes a nice change to do a small quickie structure. Just for a bit of fun I had a go at making a rough representation of a 4mm scale padlock. Came out OK I thought!
Cheers

Rather disappointingly, it doesn't look as though it opens! Seriously, that's brilliant... the first 4mm padlock perhaps?

Hi All
A bit more progress today. The upper floor is now essentially done excepting a few minor details, tidying up and weathering. I included my generic interiors to give a hint of something inside. Need to get the 24mm high window cleaners in though!
Overview of progress so far.
Cheers

Hi All
Attention has returned to the platform 1 staff building. There are 5 large vents, a smaller vent and a small hut like structure on the roof. So getting busy with the plasticard and my NWSL chopper and these are the results.
Cheers

Hi All
More of the same i am afraid. Aside from the addition of a few drainpipes the upper level is now done. Just slopped some gunk colour on it along with picking out some planks and some grey patches on the vents and the window frames.
Cheers

Hi All
Another project that had stalled until I got the arches sorted out was the lower floor of the old Staff building. Happily its now ready for paint. Before anyone asks - yes that door does need a padlock!
Cheers

Hi All
While etching more stuff I made a bit more progress on the staff building with the window frames. I didn't etch these with the arches as it would have been way too thin. Even now I have doubled up the etch to get the thickness I want - I suppose I could have used thicker material but then I think the fine central lines wouldn't have worked.
Also I needed some road signs so they went on the sheet too
Cheers

Hi All
Aside from windows I also stuck some doors on my last etch too. If you look at the pic you can see how most of the window frames and doors have been modified one way or another over the years.
Cheers

Hi All
Its always nice when you get to the stage where you can take a step back and say 'thats done'! About 99% there with my staff building = just need to secure the upper and lower floors together - add a couple more drain pipes and I'm there. I must say I am very pleased with this one!
Cheers

A few close ups. These are in pretty tight and please remember that the building will be over 3ft from the front of the layout and (mostly) behind walls!

Very nice as ever Jim - I'll bring my X-ray binoculars next time the layout is on show!
