Simple generic Southern trackplan

Please note that due to the curve throughout the station, the entrance to the bay is not a slip or a crossing, it is simply a pair of turnouts placed back to back, The tiny red dots represent uncoupler locations based on the concept that all workings to the goods shed could only be worked by up trains with the 'drop-off' wagon placed just behind the loco and conversely, only down trains could leave/collect wagons from the private siding. I realise that a leading turnout off the down mainline is unusual but as it feeds a bay platform it is acceptable.

Is another trailing crossover at the down end of the station (left on drawing) essential and would its inclusion change the signalling?

Comments, please.

Hi Tim

You will need a trap point to protect the main line from the yard. You mention the curve of the location? A nice gentle curve would really improve the plan IMHO

Jim,

Thanks.

I forgot to include it in the sketch, mea culpa.

You will need a trap point to protect the main line from the yard.

Does depend on the use intended for the Bay and the signalling arangements. The sidings are already trapped. If the Bay is for passenger trains only it can do without. If it is planned to leave Parcels vans or ECS in there than a trap is needed.

An additional crossover is only needed if you want to run around eg to service the sidings from the opposite direction, or if you want trains to terminate in the up platform and depart in the down direction.
It would need signalling as it would be out of range of the signalman's flags, assuming the box is close to the existing crossover as it should be. Currently you need to add the down home and outer home signals, the first to give access to the Bay and the second to protect the wagons you have to leave on the main when shunting the private siding.
The latter is the weak point, how much room do you have to shunt that siding without the engine going into the goods shed. It would be better if you could take the private siding off the down main.

Thank you, it passes the sanity check. The additional trailing crossover would have been difficult and their omission is a relief.

Are simple home signals suitable for the three signals at the end of their relevant platforms or do I need anything more complicated?

Yes, although two of the three are not strictly 'Home' signals, they need only the single stop arm.

I have added some more detail of appropriate signalling to your plan based on the traffic pattern in your post. It may help to download the plan and view at a larger size.

Some further details and comments on the signals included in the attached pdf file.

Many thanks,

I just need to find who makes suitable SR ground signals.

Southern Ground Signals, that'll be MSE then, I've got some here to build, when I find enough time, amongst all the other jobs to do!
