Killiekrankie

Postby Winander » Thu Jun 16, 2022 3:27 pm

The Cumbria Area Group meeting on Tuesday in unusually clement weather for Kirkby Stephen saw Killiekrankie 'assembled' in its entirety. Because sufficient space was not available indoors it was put out to grass.
The purpose of this was to establish exactly how wide it was to see if it would fit in the dedicated shed, constructed to resemble a Midland signal box, prior to its acquisition.

I'm told that the prototype viaduct was on a double track section and had a girder viaduct behind the one modelled. As the original builders wanted to demonstrate the Scottish practice of stopping up and down trains in the station loop and setting them off together in each direction, a prototypical representation would have negated that effect.

The sad news is that it is ~24 inches too wide and numerous, and sometimes frivolous, suggestions were offered. One has, however, garnered one vote in support, so all may not be lost.

The current owner does not post on this forum so I thought I would give some updates of progress. He does hope to exhibit the layout and the two viaduct boards will be displayed this weekend 18 and 19 June at the show to be held at Kirkby Stephen East station on the Stainmore line https://www.visitcumbria.com/evnp/stainmore-railway2/. It is free entry with donations towards the ongoing costs of work on the station site. There is a section of track on which they operate preserved stock, but this will not be running for the show. The show is accessible by walking from the Kirkby Stephen station on the Settle and Carlisle - what's not to like?

Another operational P4 layout will attend the show. https://www.kirkbystepheneast.co.uk/mod ... -2022.html. Note that those details state the Scalefour Society are attending as traders, I don't think Jeremy is aware and it is the Society stand.

The layout was built about 40 years ago and it is evident that it never operated in its entirety because a lot of the wiring requires attention. The current effort is concentrated on repairing track, especially the copper clad in the fiddle yard, and getting the electrics working. It is wired for DC and signalling and point motors are wired but not all present. It will, however, be operated using DCC. It will have a station building, waiting rooms, and two signal boxes when these are complete. As you can see above the basic scenery is done; much afforestation is required.
