Gees is it 5 years since I saw the viaduct at Scalefourum! That is a surprise. Well done and it is lovely to see that things are still moving forward. :thumb

Thanks Mike. Track laying on the hoof was 'hairy' to say the least! Memories of the original(?) Wallace and Grommit film. Definitely not the way to do it!

Various trains kept appearing at my right hand before reversing back as the track laying progressed....but hey....we got it all going and the punters and management seemed to like the rather unusual spectacle. We had folk looking underneath who were interested in the trestle and square mild steel tube method we use for the undercarriage.

All things considered, it turned out to be a good weekend after all.

OK boys and girls, we don't let the grass grow under our feet down 'ere in Devon, so now that the viaduct and Balcombe are finished - no that's not quite true but we can see the end of the tunnel! - we're looking again at the next phase of the plan, Lewes.

So you start with Templot usually, and this is a draft plan laid out on the floor of the clubroom last night (inside TT2, so it's quite compact and bijoux by our standards). This is looking back towards the station, with the Brighton platforms to the left and London to the right. The train is a down excursion to Eastbourne from the LMR, and to its right is the line to the Bluebell line, Uckfield and Eridge. Yes Eridge, please keep up at the back.

They all said we were mad with just the viaduct, but that is structurally complete. Balcombe is a mere stopping station. So who still thinks we're bonkers (form an orderly queue please)?

Seriously, nothing much more will happen on Lewes until after Scaleforum, but the overall plans are still intact even if still on the back burner. We will keep you informed.

Haha, we did once calculate that you could get quite a few more in at Stoke Mandeville if everything from Balcombe to Eridge via Lewes was on show - we'll discuss the details with exhibition managers when it starts to get near that size!

Nah, let's go for 2020 ... (we can do some conceptual thinking at Scaleforum!).

Back near the end of page 1, I said

"If the full ensemble ever made it to fruition, we'd be looking at 126 ft top to bottom and 73 ft left to right. Just for context the main hall at Railex measures 160 ft x 120 ft (thanks David )."

This was before the viaduct/Balcombe became a roundy, so its a bit shorter but a bit fatter at the top end, but still 'loadsaroom' (!).

Perhaps the best idea would be to put the layout around the edges of a hall and the rest of an exhibition in the middle. Can you arrange some sort of auto lifting flaps at various points so that people can get inside?

On the Brighton they often tended to use underpasses (like at Horsted Keynes). But yes we always thought in terms of an edge-based display, provided you could cater for emergency exits and other required access (see, we are serious about this!).

Rather than around the inside of the hall - why not get a bit more ambitious and put it around the outside of the hall, or even around the nearby running track? That way you could extend your empire to include Oxfordshire! A series of tents and servants with umbrellas could protect the whole thing from the elements. ;)

Putting ideas like this in their heads has a dangerous way of back firing. LMJ started out as a modest 23 feet long, then someone made a suggestion and all hell broke loose. 8-) It's now 40 feet long!

Same thing happened with Barrow Road; started as a 8ft - 10ft diaorama just the shed without the main line, then someone suggested adding the main line and well you can't have the main line without passing trains so it needed a fiddle yard - now 30ft x 13ft. I've drawn the line at making the two gasholders behind the shed!
