Design for Shunting

Postby tmcsean » Thu Dec 03, 2020 10:12 am

The new Scalefour News has a tantalising article by Noel Anderson describing a Windows goods traffic management system he has written for his own layout. It dwarfs my own efforts to model a realistic traffic flow and I would be very interested in playing around with it. So this post is an enquiry to Noel (either directly if he is a Forum user or indirectly if not) whether it is available to download - on a strictly no-support, as-is basis.

Yes, it's available. Following Keith's comment the files are now attached.

The program was written in the now obsolete VB5 [I started it a long time ago, as a hobby exercise in its own right, and there were prolonged periods when life got in the way]. Microsoft, at the time I took it to Scaleforum, provided .exe files which could be freely downloaded to enable VB5 and VB6 programs to run on Win10, but this support has now ceased. However, these files could be freely supplied with the 'product' file, so this I can still do. The files involved consist of an exe file for the application, approx. 1Mb and the MS .exe file, also approx. 1Mb, plus a ReadMe.txt and a number of data files for the built-in examples, all small.

It is not a commercial product, nor was ever intended to be, and is provided free. I have a Computing BSc and treated writing it as a serious programming exercise for hypothetical other users, so it requires no specialist computing knowledge to make it work, and it was written for general use, not to fit one particular layout. It has been debugged to the best of my ability [the original programmer is notoriously never the best person to look for bugs], and has worked for some time on two of my computers, one running Win10 [which is regularly updated], the other Win7. However, I feel that I must warn you that I offer no guarantees or warranties of any sort, so you use it at your own risk.

EDIT 5/12/2020 - One line added to the first paragraph and several deleted. Two attachments added

ReadMe.txt

You should be able to attach the files on here if you zip them.

Would 'WeTransfer' work? I've sent some big images this way.

Id be interested in taking a look too if thats ok.

I could always rewrite it into Python or similar language if it was simple enough to do.

Thanks

I am interested, and pleasantly surprised, to see that downloads have now reached 100. So far, I have not had any feedback, so should I assume that no news is good news? Or that nobody has used it yet? I must admit to a certain curiosity on the matter!

I run this on Win 10, and the latest update has caused a problem, by preventing Traffic saving changes. I found out when I did my usual post-update check and got a message that 'controlled folder access' was preventing changes, so nothing would save. It can be amended using the instructions here https://www.bing.com/search?q=Use%20controlled%20folder%20access&form=B00032&ocid=SettingsHAQ-BingIA&mkt=en-GB. At 4., if you want to leave CFA in force, click on "Allow an app through controlled folder access"; if you have found out the way I did, the Traffic file will be offered on the next screen, otherwise click on "+ Add an app" and select from the options given, which permit a search.

I have a copy of Traffic on Win 11, which I have to run as an administrator, but that machine is currently not internet enabled, so I don't know the current position there.

Noel
