That Flickr site is quite a find - and I find it amazing that someone took a picture of BNS destination board in 1987.....

Hi All
Another one rolls off the workbench - the usual treatment for a Hornby 50, replacement bodyside grills, windscreen frames, roof fan, proper sized wheels and lowered on its bogies.
Theres a reason for doing 031 and also for it being almost ex-works and that reason is what happened to the ship its named after. My own little tribute to those lost, of the 1418 crew only 3 survived her sinking during WWII.

1 - very slim
1a - to still have it 25 years later - even slimmer
2 - yep slimmer still
3 - actually the most likely of all - given that I do regular searches for anything tagged Birmingham New Street.
All in probably something close to lottery odds?

Re: New Street progress
Right then - thats enough class 50's for a bit. However I cant really escape my current fascination with English Electrics so...
Class 31 - a Hornby/Lima hybrid.
When the more exotic classes (class 56 or 58) wern't around pairs of class 31's were often used on the Nuneaton drags. Those familiar with New Street might recognise this angle as the view you get over the wall at the London End. Of course once the overhead is in place this shot wont be possible.
Something a little different. 2 shots taken for one picture. The upper one is an overall shot, with a single spotlight bounced from the roof. The lower one the only light source is an LED in the coach and a hand held LED above the station lamp. By combining the two, lightening up the lamp and darkening the sky plus some work with curves and a tiny but of lens flair (mostly rubbed out though) the end result is below.
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
Hi All
Been busy building more platform structures (i suppose modules is the right word). Starting with a boring one!
This is the viewing side
And the operating side. You will note that the little details are left off the non viewing side and the door is simply framed rather than recessed.
More interesting is the module for the lift.
The recess at the none lift end is where the timetables will go. These modules still need the bumpers adding and all 8 (there are 4 of each) need posters. These will be added after the painting stage.
Cheers

Hi All
I have been busy but not with a lot to show for it. Heres a few images anyway.
The most recent platform modules are now painted - heres how they look in place.
I have also revisited my first pair of HST power cars. Adding guards windows and sorting out the livery. I found a pic of 43151 at new street in 1987 still with the first version of IC livery so that provides a bit of variation. Its seen here with one of the later IC liveried power cars.
Cheers

Hi All
I plan a fleet of 8 class 31s, 2 of which are done so far (31108 is back in the shop). Of these 3 will have Hornby power (they are all Lima bodies for those new to the thread) 1 will be a dummy, and the other 4 (or perhaps 3 if I decide to do one as a light loco and keep the Lima motor) are going to be powered by the innards of Athearn PA1's. Below is progress so far on the first Athearn test build.
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
Hi All
One of my batch of 31's has jumped ahead of the others due to the original body being the right livery (although I re-sprayed the ends) and that its an unpowered one. Bearing this in mind I cut a few corners on the pipe work and just used wire as it will always be inside another loco. (you will note I still have to add couplings and if you really know your 31's the radiator fan cowl)
The victim this time is 31413, which I found a piccie of looking quite filthy!
I was quite pleased with how the wet bits came out on this one.
Cheers

You're welcome Howard
Hi All
One job that I am aware I need to do but doesn't really inspire is adding the wheel slip equipment to my Lima HST vehicles.
Not all that taxing in itself but thats one coach down, 20 more to do!
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
Hi All
For the first time in as long as I can remember I have spent the last couple of weeks building something for no other reason than for the hell of it. It doesnt fit with the time period of any of the layouts I am involved in but...
LEV1 - the prototype for the pacers. Essentially a double ended Leyland National Bus mounted on a wagon chassis.
The body is a narrowed Hornby pacer shell with cab ends from a couple of EFE leyland nationals. The body was narrowed by cutting the sides from the roof and then carefully cutting away at the inside of the roof where it drops down until I could bend it in to match the width of the cabs.
The chassis was knocked up from Plasticard around some Bill bedford sprung W irons. The springs and dampers were salvaged from an old Lima class 60 bogie.
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
Well why not have a flight of fancy. Build some thing that you would like and enjoy the challange as somethign completely different! Looks great by the way. As others have asked why are we all quiet. Personally there was some home mod's required a new fence and remove a wall to make No1 son's bed room larger.... well closer no 1 daughters rooms size! This scratch building just ends up a little bit heavier. Must get back to what I should be doing! ( is that modelling or changing the house?)

Getting back on topic with another class 86
Like my model of 50031 I was quite fascinated by the story behind the name so its another 'tribute' loco. The Story of Driver John Axon GC can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Axon
Still been working on my fleet of 31's with another batch going through the weathering stage
Below is my fleet of /4s
