It looks like it would work. You may have to have more of these Jim. Seriously, a nice looking bit of work.

Jim, I do look forward to your updates. To spend time on making a isolator so beautifully over a week no more! Comparing to my minuscule attempt over a week ago to do a little bit of modelling . Umm but Easter is here I hope to get a little bit done on Monday as being away..... May even get to an exhibition on Saturday. I do look forward in years time to see BNS at scalefourum again

Re: New Street progress
Yes very nice Jim and something that appeals to my interest in soldering up bits of brass as can be seen at
http://www.scalefour.org/scaleforum/201 ... _7627.html
This sort of thing is a bit fiddly and time consuming but is not really very difficult - using solder of different melting points helps as does some bit of wood to hold things in place.
Its a good job that someone I know well does not at present have plans to model OHL, at least of this period but for a long time I have had a hankering to model the LBSC electrics of 1909. The OHL of that period was not as complex as used on the WCML but is still interesting.

Thanks both
I would estimate this took about 6 hours, I only picked up th brass on tuesday afternoon. As Terry says its ultimately just soldering 2 bits of brass together.

Re: New Street progress
Hi Jim,
Having passed through New Street on Wednesday on my way to The Eagles concert at the NEC, I found that it is going through a massive revamp, which now means that your trainset is now a historical record of the way it was. All those sets of stairs and or escalators have pretty much disappeared, all the platform exits are now at the Wolverhampton end of the platforms a right pain as my train stopped at the London end and now the only access to and from the station is on Stephenson Street, with all the work going on it took ages to get my bearings with all the changes going on in connection with the trams etc.
What it will end up like I have no idea, but currently the centre of each platform is behind hoardings, the signage leaves a lot to be desired.
Cheers Phil

It already was Phil. It had a revamp in the early 90s too. Although this one is far more substantial I don't think the 'improvement' at platform level will be as good as us brummies have been told.

Hi all
I've painted up my mast and changed the mounting for the contact wire, here's how it looks in temporary position.
I've also been busy working on a few more wagons
This is an ex caustic soda tank from the Appleby kit. For more wagons see http://www.p4newstreet.com/wagons
Cheers

Jim,
That really does look fabulous - well done.
I confess that I don't envy you the task of the adding remaining few hundred!!
Best wishes,

Jim,
The mast looks excellent. You've probably mentioned it before but, what size will the contact wire be and will it be N/S or phosphor bronze?
Cheers,
David

The contact wire will be .25mm nickel coated steel. In reality you can barely see it!

The mast is a real work of art and of course just one small part of the layout. Brilliant work Jim.

Re: New Street progress
Sometimes an impulse buy can lead to a whole load of trouble. In this instance I've always liked Jintys and indeed I scratchbuilt a body for an n gauge one as a kid. It was a bit rubbish to be honest, ok a lot rubbish and the fact that it was scratchbuilt couldn't save it from the bin! However the Great British Locomotives collection have just done one and for less than a tenner I couldn't resist!
This is how it came out of the packet although I did reattach the bufferbeam so that it was straight.
In the real world steam wasn't allowed in New Street in my era so the above would never have happened but it's good for a little flight of fantasy.
The problem is I've found myself looking at the Brassmasters detailing kit, as well as the High Level chassis kit. Also thoughts of a small diorama based on some sort of industrial setting and set at night (and in the rain). This is not a good thing!

You are on a slippery slope here Jim... the next thing we will hear is you have found space for a standard gauge challenge layout with a Jinty, a coal tank and other interesting steam things.
I am with you though trying to stay to one interest is hard... ( I am finding it hard to get to that one, this weekend might allow something to happen)
Good luck.... and will power

Re: New Street progress
The slope is getting more slidy by the day doug. While looking at the brassmasters jinty upgrade I found this http://www.brassmasters.co.uk/deeley.htm and I'm quite drawn to that too! Thing is, is the GBL jinty accurate? I'm assuming it's basically a rip off of the bachmann one. I know if I wanted a jinty then new wheels bunged into a bachmann one would be the easy route but there's a certain appeal to building a proper chassis, just for the hell of it!
Cheers
Jim
Ps, I admit I've been looking at industrial locations to see if something appeals. Something with rail and canal would be nice and good practise for proof house junction.

The High Level kit is has the somewhat old fashioned 3 point compensation. Bill Bedford does an alternative designed for CSBs. Perhaps you should do one of each to compare!

As Bill himself once said, why would I have any interest in what he produces? Besides if CSBs are so simple can't I just bung a few handrail knobs on the high level one?
I like the idea of maglev springs but then I'm a bit odd!

Well, BHX would be the logical next step after BNS

Re: New Street progress
Well Jim, that say a change is as good as a holiday. I have pulled out an old layout which I purchased when I first started in P4.... from a local member. I am now thinking of turning it back into a test track/ shunting puzzle style layout... problem is I once started modifying the track layout so it is almost back to a blank canvas. I'll pop some photos up.... may be every one can suggest a new track layout. It will end up 3000x 300.. in the end. Small enough to live in my railway room with the OO and all the other junk I seem to be collecting.

For the last few years I've done an off topic project (GWR railcar, LEV 1) so this has appeal too.
Might start a new topic for it
