Hi Dave, Thank you but it does help that it has pick ups on the tender as well as the normal on the drivers.

Robin - that is wonderful running at slow speed! Could I ask what motor and gear ratio you have there?

Hornby don’t say what their gear ratios are but I imagine it could be worked out. I’ve often wondered as I do a conversion, but I doubt the ratio will be more than 30:1 or maybe 35:1. There is a big can motor in a Black Five and Hornby's motors turn over pretty slowly.

Julian,

The motor and gearbox are Hornby as supplied in the loco. The short answer is I don't know the ratio but Philip is probably right.

Thanks Robin and Phil. The Hornby mechanism is impressive! I've looked quickly right through the thread - fabulous :thumb ; I can't see anywhere what kind of controller you have, and whether it is something that gives enhanced slow speed control, or DCC for example.

You mention you had 4-6-0 problems on curves and that you got Masokits etches for the Black 5 bogie. I take it the modification has been successful, is that something you're doing for other 4-6-0s?

Julian,

Most RTR engines will do that these days with a half decent controller, DCC or DC. Occasionally you get a real cracker, like my Hornby 700 and Bachmann Dukedog, both of which have three pole motors! The Hornby T9, like the Black Five, has a five pole job, and I could hardly better it with one of my own.

It seems to prove Dave Bradwell’s assertion elsewhere in these pages that high gear ratios are often not necessary, although I do like them for shunters.

Hi Julian,

Bristol Barrow Road is DCC and is operated with NCE equipment. I have the 5amp command unit with Procab handheld units.
The Black 5 is the only loco I have which uses Masokits front bogies but I have several other sets of them to use on other Hornby Black 5s and maybe Bachmann Jubilees. Barrow Road had a large allocation of the latter.

It has been a while since I did any work on the roundhouse roof so I recently added the smoke hood support wires, 4 to each hood, to the 22 that are inside the shed.

The roof is entirely scratchbuilt from brass section and nickel silver wire.

The smoke hoods are of two types - 3 older wooden types which are ex Midland/LMS in origin which I scratchbuilt from plasticard and brass angle, and 19 'asbestos/concrete' units which are cast in resin by my Friend Morgan from a 3D printed master. Morgan also produced the etched supports on the lower edge of the units.

I have used Markits WD handrail knobs - 4 per unit - as hood anchor points for the nickel silver wire supports.

Once finished I sprayed the complete roof with Halfords grey primer.

I particularly like the two interlaced exits from the nearest wagon t/t - don't think I've seen such a layout before (but it has a number of attractions in a tight yard ...). However, am I right in thinking that all those lines go tits-up if the big spinning disc in the house where they keep the fiery things jams, tilts or comes of its bearings - or is there another access from one of the lines that isn't completed yet?

Thank you all for your kind comments.

As with all roundhouses if the turntable does not function all roads radiating to/from it will become blocked and stock will be isolated until a repair is made. There is no other access.

The two turntables at the rear of the shed are for loco access to the four road workshop - there were originally four. They are not wagon turntables although occasionally they were used for such. Their diameter enabled Midland 3F & 4F 0-6-0s minus their tender to gain entry and exit from the Workshop.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. That's the problem with roundhouses, and the reason sensible railways moved away from them at an early stage, but they do make very impressive structures, as models and in real life!

Robin.
All looking very impressive - and realistic. I especially like the internal shots. It just needs a 100 years of soot and grime (and a turntable deck), but I'm sure you've got that all planned.
How is the fiddle yard and wiring coming along?
Dave.

Hi Dave,
I have a 60ft turntable etch from LRM which I started to assemble a couple of weeks ago after it had been sat on my work bench for some time.
However having checked the main girders on the etch I find them not deep enough by 2mm. The Cowans Sheldon drawing I provided shows the girder plate 4ft 7.5in deep whereas the etch is a scale 4ft 1in. I'm pondering how to proceed.

The layout is now completely wired and hopefully debugged so when are you coming round with your locos? You are most welcome just PM me your availability.

Robin,
Your query about the girder depth of a Cowans Sheldon 60ft turntable prompted me to check the depth of the model I recently build from a Midland Railway Centre kit. This turned out to be 18.5mm, which corresponds exactly to your drawing dimension. Regrettably that does not solve your problem!

Robin,

I have informed John Redrup of your comment (he is busy packing the family into the car for their holiday in France) on the LRM LRM 60ft turntable that he gave you. It is a test etch for a kit being designed for LRM and he was looking for feedback on it.

Jol,

Thank you for advising John. I have already advised John via email about the issue with the girder depth.

FYI John put me in contact with Alan W who is also doing a test build and I have copied John into our correspondence.

On Monday Bristol Barrow Road was visited by a number of good friends for a running session to test out some locomotives. It was pleasing to see the shed sidings with a large number of visiting engines so I thought I would share some photos with you.

Thanks for the kind comments. The locos in the shed sidings were about half of the P4 locos available on the day and included some that may be familiar to members of the society, the Merchant Navy, Jubilee and a certain 9F for example.
Midland 3F 43822 was fitted with a sound chip which sounded superb - I think I have become a convert.I will try and post a video later.
Thanks to Dave,David,Steve and Morgan for a great day.
