Having clicked on Alan's link to Screwfix, it is clear that is where mine came from.

The boards are resting on temporary wooden beams for now but, as it is difficult to get timber that is dead straight, I'm going to get some beams made up from square metal sections.

I have used this system on the new layout (which will be at Scaleforum in September for anyone that wants to take a look) and am very pleased with them.

A couple of nuances are that they are, as supplied by Draper (or others), not that adjustable as they only adjust in 50mm intervals. I dealt with this by a bit of welding to create some screw adjustments. You can see this here https://highlandmiscellany.com/2014/04/ ... -supports/ . I also cut and shut them to make them a lot wider https://highlandmiscellany.com/2014/02/ ... we-get-to/ so that I could use them to support two baseboards deep.

I have used timber girders made from ply but I did have the advantage of a joiners shop to ensure that they were made truly flat for me (they were actually run through the circular bench saw after they were made to make sure of this). Thanks Mark, yes, they will need some form of finer adjustment. Your post has made me think that I could make girders as L girders out of ply.

After not even visiting the layout for 4 months, I've ordered enough components to complete phase 1 of the track work which will be the main Consett Up and Down lines as per the Templot screenshot below. This consists of five turnouts, a diamond and a single slip. The plan is to get this trackwork all laid, wired and working before moving on to the next phase and I'm hoping this will allow progress without getting stuck with one particular job.



The very first train ran on the layout on Thursday night albeit on just 4' of track. My 11 year old granddaughter did the honours - she has said for a long time now that she wanted to drive the first train, hopefully the first of many to come...

It's beginning to look a bit like a railway. 50cm (they'll be cut down to 48cm each to mimic two 60') panels made up and loosely placed for now.

There's probably room although all the others in the group are O gauge modellers so the space is rapidly filling up...

Been working on the raised track bed that allows me to have the three levels going under the bridge. The bridge will sit about 6mm higher once everything is in place.

Good to see progress John, and the last picture does have a very familiar feel about it!
