Hi all

This weekend Phil, Tim, Simon and myself held the first test running of Calcutta sidings 2 and the universal fiddlyard.

This shows a pair of hsts, flat out (which is about a scale 100mph)

Hi David

They are both Lima but powered by bachmann class 25 chassis with their class 158 worm gears. One has 4 powered axles in the lead power car, Mjt bogies on the coaches and the Lima trailing bogies in the trailing power car.

The other has a class 25 power bogie in each power car and has fully rigid bogies

52' x 17' I think it says in the video description. Doesn't it need an extra 10ft adding for New St too Jim or is this the longer version?

I really must work towards getting this 28xx and 100 wagons done with large layouts available for a potential trial.. I don't think 100 wagons would be a Sunday afternoon quickie bit of fun though .

Those HSTs do run through the pointwork beautifully.

Thanks for the kind comments. Rod, I know the outside curve is 9' radius, as for the inside, I can't remember what Jim had drawn, but I suspect it's about 6' minimum. Phil's minimum radius before the layout goes down to 4'6" on his set of curves. The set of 32 crossing in the middle I built as B7's (ish) whilst the curved boards vary. The curved point work has been extensively rebuilt by me over the past 6 months due to some serious uneven rail expanding & pinging All sorted now, but it has created a few hundred hours of extra work for me with additional sleepering & soldering. I have about 15 points to fettle again before we can declare it exhibition ready.

Jim and I were talking about the full length versions of our layouts and we reckon we both need about 72' in total, which is four additional straight boards. This is a few years off though as Phil's happy with 52' by 17' for Calustta Sidings v.2 He’s only got 40’ of scenery to do now. . . .

The only problem we face is 58’ x 17’ 4” is the maximum we can get in my kids school hall. I must get my Gibson E4 finished too for the next test

Its not a perfect curve but the inner radius is about 7ft6 - the outer is 10ft although I think it comes down to 9 in places.

Looks like we will need a larger hall for Scaleforum at some stage in the future.

I think new street and tring will fit in the mole barn. Not much else will though and the difference in height from one end to the other will be a problem.

Well New Street is already booked for Scaleforum this year so we will all be able to see the marvels that Jim has created although it will only be part of the scenic section not the fiddle yard as well. Phil has a standing invitation to bring Calcutter Sidings to Scaleforum when he is ready although it looks like there is a bit of scenic work to do yet. Tring is probably a couple of years off at present.

Hornby 50 on test. Hornby 50's have a bad reputation in P4 - this one is a straight wheel swap.

Just finished the latest building for Phil, this is the canning factory for Bass as was in the late 80's. This structure is the backscene for board 4 of 10

Wow! That looks really good - far too little modern architecture is modelled, in my opinion.

I have surveyed at least 40 buildings just like that. They were never that clean! Well done for capturing the mundaneness.

The brown coated cladding originates from the 1970's/early 1980's and it fades very badly (don't ask for the technical details as I might be tempted to tell you but the brown does it worse than any other colour!). So you may want to tone down the brown a bit? Aim for a Cadburys Dairy Milk chocolate colour if you do decide to.

The roof lights ought to be a definate tinge of yellow to them as well, as this is the other main failure with a building like this. Oops, I'll get my coat..............
