A few things on my workbench
This is my first post on this site so just a few photos of my latest builds. First picture is a Hornby horse box converted to P4 the second is a David Geen a Dragon models and modified cooper craft coal wagons and the third is a Bloater with a masokits underframe. I do have progress photo's of these builds and jigs made to make the handles for the bloater if members are interested.

Re: A few things on my workbench
Hi Pete,
I'm particularly impressed with those properly shaped GWR brake safety loops.
The five sided ones, rather than the straightforward up-and-down loops are tricky to make to the right shape and consistent in size and shape from scratch.
I've actually just added some test etches of those on the side of another etch I've sent to PPD. I felt that might be an easier way of getting them consistent. I'll find out in a few weeks if I did the calculations properly.
Great modelling all round - I'll look forward to seeing more.
Cheers
Paul

Thanks paul. The jig for these come in the underframe kit it's a bit tricky to make but once done it does give consistent safety loops.

It certainly will Doug but it might get me started on building a layout at long last.

Re: A few things on my workbench
The Bloater has recieved the first topcoats of paint. I have a question to fellow members, was the buffer beam the same colour as the body or was it the solebar colour.

Finished all the painting today. Once the paint has fully dried will start to apply transfers, glue roof on. When all has set will varnish, fit buffers, screw couplings and weather.

Just one more question. Does anyone know who makes a transfer sheet for the parkside bloater. The ones one the HMRS transfer sheets are too large for the wagon as I found out tonight

Re: A few things on my workbench
I've always had rather a soft spot for Bloaters, perhaps because the sliding door configuration was a quite an uncommon feature in GWR wagon design practice. Only managed to see one 'in the flesh'; this was an example that infested the S&T Works yard at Reading for everal years in the late 1960s.
Your model is looking very good indeed, but at the risk of being thought excessively critical, I wonder whether the moulded roof might be a little on the wide side. I haven't found a a dimension for the roof width on a drawing, but am merely going by observation of photographs, which suggest that the the roof edge did not project beyond the angle iron on the vehicle's sides. Perhaps worth a check before the roof is secured in place?

Been thinking the same thing John. Thankyou for mentioning it. Will now modify before glueing.

Re: A few things on my workbench
Very nice Pete!
I hadn't noticed the bloater roof until John mentioned it, but I entirely agree with the suggestion and the result IMHO makes a massive difference to the model. Excellent work and well worth the effort.
I'm really impressed with the horsebox too! You've really lifted the model away from any signs of it's RTR pedigree. Any chance you could elaborate on the modification's you made to this vehicle? I've potentially got one on the cards which will be modelled as a return to Binegar Calf Box. I do like the blend of roof dirt, any chance of the recipe?

Re: A few things on my workbench
Hi Paul
Most of the conversion to P4 is covered in an artical in MRJ 216 by Gerry Beale except for the clasp brakes which I will explain how I will do these different on the second conversion I have yet to do and some of the small pitfalls I found along the way with this model. The weathering was carried out following the description in "the art of weathering"by Martin Welch which I cannot recommend enough. I will post the photos of this conversion with captions if that is ok.
