Thanks all for the info on the paint for blue bricks I will look into it when my local model shop opens again. Will post more of the footbridge as the painting continues

Re: A few things on my workbench
Yes I agree Paul. I have too many projects that hit a snag for what ever reason, the V2's was waiting on a delivery pre scale(online) fourum from the UK which I thought would be about the normal 2 weeks, but was about 7 due to back logs of orders etc. ok I go off and start another project (NER signal box) which surprisingly I finished but I have not gone back to the V2's. Ok there is a half built NER station building, the snag is how to repair some over cut arch windows. So I moved to clean up the layout, here is where I had the buildings (for the paint, as this is a tenuous link to the topic) just need to finally assemble these. As the paints were out, I have another stalled project of a wills station I started the 10 years ago, which got a look in. So maybe I will finish off these buildings (and one demolished by Lyn by accident years ago, a reassemble and paint activity) then get back to the Locos.
The one thing about all of this is I am using the store of paints... but buying more colours. The other thing is my building painting is creating a bigger appreciation of how the paints behave and the use of various colours... and unusually for me writing them down in a spiral bound book of technics. So I can one day assist other people locally when asked how did you paint the York stone, brickwork etc. and include the humbrol colour and number. I already have a page on wagon painting! With technics and colours.
So back to the colour of engineering brick, Terry was I right with the blue?

Thank you for your comment. I was hoping to do some more tonight but my eyes had other ideas as I could not focus with the optivisor on so will try again at the weekend.

That's coming along rather nicely.
The GWR red and blue engineering bricks always do have a certain smartness to them. This goes back a while, and is kept for nostalgic reasons:
I'm looking forward to seeing the signal box progress.
Cheers

Thanks Paul
Is that a weighbridge hut? I am trying to split my time between the footbridge and the signal box so I have a change when I need it. I need to try and make a pattern for the finials for the footbridge as none were supplied with the kit but at the time (the1990s or earlier) the manufacturer suggested buying scalelink ones which I done on the day of purchase. Move foreward to present time and I found the scalelink finials to be woefully undersize for the kit so I must bite the bullet and see what I can make.

It is... Plans from one of the Adrian Vaughan books if I remember correctly. Plasticard shell, with individually applied bricks, coloured with watercolour.
I can place when I built it pretty much as 1983/84. I was doing O Level Computer Studies at school at the time. At the back of the classroom was this great big antiquated machine for generating computer punchcards with programs on them. It wasn't used at all. It was just a relic, a museum piece.
But it did produce chads. And for someone who had just come under the spell of Bob Barlow and Iain Rice...
Cheers

Funny you should mention those chads my friend used them in the 80s as well. I tried them but could not get on with them.

Re: A few things on my workbench
Have been working on the footbridge again. The steps and platform have now been toned down with a dirty wash, the second coat of dark stone applied, handrails now been painted, matt black applied to base and underside of footbridge, light stone has been touched up in places and corrugated sheets primed a coat of varnish will be sprayed on tomorrow . I am waiting to hear back from modelu about finials. Hope you like the pics

I like chads. A bit overscale but still very effective. I had a supply some time ago but I think I may have passed them on.

I like them as well. There's something about the slight unevenness that reinforces the impression of handmade brick (well, pre-fully industrialised bricks) and a less that professional laying technique. More for vernacular buildings than things like railway bridges and viaducts.
Our newly moved in neighbour has refurbished the house and fitted exterior uplights by the door. Even on a relatively modern house, they really show the texture of the brickwork on what in daylight looks a flat finish. This sort of thing, which now I've noticed it once, I see in quite a few places:

There are a couple of throwaway lines in the contemporary articles in Model Railways (around 1983?) written by Iain that suggest that Bob was not entirely successful in that goal at all times

One thing I have just noticed, is the lack of smoke deflectors under the cross walkway, did these footbridges have them?
Excellent work by the way, it really looks the part.
Cheers
Phil.

Re: A few things on my workbench
Hi Phil
You are correct they were fitted with smoke deflectors but I have not fitted them yet as they are quite delicate and I need to place them in the correct position when it is lined up with the tracks. Since these photos were taken there has been a disaster with varnishing. The matt varnish (new unopened tin) and model were at room temp before spraying. The mix was 70% thinners ( varnish thinners as bought from the same supplier as varnish) 30% varnish. When dried it was matt but in the nooks and angles a white deposit formed . I phoned the company who make it and was informed I applied too much varnish that caused it. Nothing on their website about this issue. I now have to find a way to correct this issue ( hoping mattcote will cancel it out as applied some on an area affected otherwise it's a strip job and 20+ hours wasted

Re: A few things on my workbench
It seems the Humbrol mattcote has worked still a couple of areas have it but weathering will cover it. Have now glued on the roof and started to fit the roof corragations.

Hope that you're on the mend and that it was routine, rather than The Plague.
Take care,
Paul

Thanks Paul just a flare up of a condition I have had to deal with for 10 years. Normally antibiotics work but needed something a bit stronger

Re: A few things on my workbench
Finally finished all the flat corrugations and rolled in the joints. Now have to do the arch corrugations. Had to work out the corrugation widths to make sure they finished in the middle of the footbridge.
