Trio of wagon kits - socially distanced challenge

Postby nberrington » Sun May 10, 2020 7:44 pm

Well - I’ve made a start on a few Brassmasters chassis intended for some Cambrian and Slaters wagons.

After some hours of work I’ve realized one does need a dram, as the wizard of the moor suggests...

Something fine and rare to take on Finney’s fiddly bits...

The kits are excellent, although I don’t care for the safety loops which seem to mangle at will. I opted for some Bill Bedford etches on the subsequent wagons.

Something looks seriously wrong with the brakegear on the inverted chassis in the third shot. Too much of the content of the second shot, perhaps? :D :D

I think they’re right........

The problem is course that I would contend to know a bit about scotch, but am no expert on brake gear! I depend upon the instructions, which I have slavishly followed.

There is very little wrong with Dallas Dhu, other than that the distillery is long gone.

I plead confusion caused by what appeared to be a cross shaft. The latest picture shows this has been removed, so they are right.

Phew. I was worried I had them reversed or something.

The cross shaft is cut as one of the final steps. I use a cutting disc to trim up all the long wire bits.

If the cross shaft was to remain, then the brake gear on one side was backwards. It would have had the effect of applying the brakes on one side and taking them off on the other. But since the cross shaft has been removed they are now independent and appear to be set up correctly.
