GWR Locomotive axles

Postby bordercollie » Fri Feb 14, 2020 7:15 am

Hi
I am about to order some wheel sets. I have to chooose between Plain or Indented axles. Were all GWR axles one type or the other or is it a matter of checking with photographs? Or to put another way did all of the Churchard locos forward have indented axles?

Check photographs both historical and preserved.

Also get your hands on the Russell book of GWR locos.

Beware there are many kinds of turning centres (indents). Ultrascale indents (for example) are quite pronounced, whereas on some engines they can almost look like pin pricks. Look at a Dukedog and you will find that it has a small centre deepened by a big chamfer on the edge.

I prefer to put in my own centres, but am fortunate to have the means to easily do this ie a lathe.
