Is there a readily web-accessible list of the shed codes in use by the LMS (LNER, SR and GWR also would be useful, to a lesser extent) in 1943-45, please?
I am in the process of tracing my late father's rail travels/spotting logs as a 16/17 year old in this period, primarily between Poole and York, and in the Bristol and Birmingham districts. At present, my library is all boxed up and awaiting new shelves.
Google search provided several 'near-misses'...........
Many thanks,
Steve

Steve,
Are these of any help, taken from my 1959 Ian Allen book?

I would have thought that information would have been 'classified' at the time?
I have the codes for 1950, from my ABC.

It was only the LMS that had the Number/Letter codes - the others used long names or suitable abbreviations. The LMS system was adopted by BR in 1950 and rolled out to the others as in Rob's post.

Re: 1943-5 LMS Shed codes
Thanks guys,
Robin, Rob, brilliant - very useful!
Tim - yes indeed; I guess dad logged the shedplates where he could, but in many cases (eg. not at Bristol, Holbeck) would not know the precise coding significance. As BC notes, on other Railways the code-names would be more intuitive eg SDN, DID etc.
In the absence of any Ian Allan publications at this date, dad had laboriously constructed class list in school exercise books, with space for recording 'cops' as place/date. A real labour of love, including remote Welsh and Scottish classes. Based in Poole, his home ground was SR (LSWR), with SDJR/MR to Bristol/ Birmingham/Leeds/York as second fiddle, plus London and suburbs.
Many thanks, I can now enrich the record he obtained,
Cheers,
Steve

Re: 1943-5 LMS Shed codes
Rob, the 1959 ones have a few major changes from LMS days. All the sheds which went to the NER (eg Holbeck and its subsheds changed from 20x to 55x). This had an effect on other areas on the boundaries.
Cheers,

Re: 1943-5 LMS Shed codes
And Shrewsbury LMS and all the south Wales LMS sheds have moved to the WR series [which is why there are no 4x numbers in 1959].
