I am converting a Hornby 08 to P4 using Gibson wheels and I'm not happy with the cranks. The Hornby cranks are near scale while the Gibson cranks are far too large (and the Ultrascale ones are no better). I think it should be possible to reuse the Hornby cranks if I can get some square ended axles. Does anybody have any ideas?
After measuring, I think the axles need to be 27.8mm long (28mm nominal?), 3mm diameter, with the outer 2.1mm milled to 1.5mm square and drilled about 0.8mm for about 1mm.
All advice gratefully received, even if it's just the name of a engineering company!
In addition, does anybody have any works drawings of the the 08 radiator grilles/slats and bonnet ladders?

Would it be possible just to use the Hornby axles?
(I have the Bachmann version so have not seen these).

Unfortunately not. The Hornby wheelsets are made up of an inner axle which the wheels fit on. The outer stub axles are cast into the wheel centres.

if you are not happy with the Gibson or Ultrascale cranks it is possible you might be able to get hold of some Martin Finney ones. I think he used to do them as a separate etch but not sure whether Brassmasters still do this.

Would it be possible to cut the Hornby axle and drill it to take a length of round bar to extend it too the axle to the required length. a lathe would be useful too do this accurately.

Can you just print some new cranks instead?

I have considered drilling new axles to take 1.5mm square rod, but hoped to avoid it! Printing some new cranks would be an option, but I would still need to reduce the axle ends to get them anywhere near scale, so I might try that second.

could you not drill the hornby cranks through 2mm and then machine the end of the axle to suit, so its just stepped down at the end.
Im just doing the same conversion with brassmasters rods.

A bit late to this particular party but I wasn't aware that Martin Finney had done 08 cranks. Brassmasters don't do them (they only produce rods and balance weights), but Impetus used to include laminated cranks as part of their 08/09 chassis etch. Long gone, unfortunately.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Try contacting Justin Newitt at Rumney Models as he did some 08 cranks for me earlier this year.
