Bachmann Gear Wheel

Postby Serjt-Dave » Sat Jun 11, 2016 10:30 pm

Hi All.
A little help please.
I'm in the process of converting a couple of Bachmann Jinty's to P4. I take it the gear wheel on the axle you can't remove and re use. Anyone knows who produces a compatible replacement gear wheel please.

Thanks.

Dave

When I did mine I reused the Bachmann gear, fitted on the Gibson axle with no problem.

Presumably this particular loco had 1/8th axles so easy.
Sadly some other modern made but old period locos I have bought to convert use odd axle sizes for no good reason except to annoy us!

Watch out for this trap.

They are 3mm axles, Alan Gibson conversion sets have the correct diameter so the gear and bearings fit, item 4800/17
See http://www.alangibsonworkshop.com/Bachmann%201F%20Half%20Cab.pdf
AG does not seem to have an instruction sheet for the Jinty but its very similar.

Scalefour News No.166, pages 4-7 has an article by Mike Ainsworth on converting the Bachmann Jinty. Available at http://www.scalefour.org/members/newsarchive/ This does however use Ultrascale direct replacement wheels so it will be a bit different if other wheels are used.

Thanks guys, some useful info there. I forgot that you can buy conversion wheel sets. If I had remembered I would have gone down this road rather than buying the wheels etc separately. I should have twigged it as one of my Jinty's was converted by the Society and uses an Ultrascale set.

Just for the hell of it I put the Bachmann axle with the drive gear on it into a vice and tapped the end of the axle with a hammer and lo and behold it popped straight out. Flushed with success I prepared one of the Gibson axles and repeated the same operation but in reverse and now I have the gear axle all sorted. Happy Day!

I like Kieth's idea of making up dummy frames out of lead flashing, will give that ago. I'm using the Brassmaster detailing kit so will incorporate the front and rear frame detail plates in these as well.

All Best

Dave
