Grub screws for Portescap Final drive gears

You may struggle with that. Portescap distribute the motors, sure, but they weren't responsible for the gearbox or gears which I think were the work of Davall....

Surely its just a matter of finding out what thread is used (trial and error?) and then it is simple to make your own grub screw.
If I can locate my box of motors over the weekend I'll have a look.

Chances are it was a small BA thread unless the gerabox makers had been seduced into going metric

Just tried the 'trial and error' method. BA threads won't fit. The grub screw measures 1.5mm not sure of the pitch though. I've got a pitch gauge at work, I'll try to remember to bring it home tomorrow.

Tested the pitch of grub screw, it comes out at 0.35 pitch. but searching for m1.5 x 0.35 doesn't seem very common, m1.6 looks more readily available.

Found the right box, the scew measures 1.5mm OD , same as 10BA, but a 10BA screw jams after a couple of turns so it is almost certainly metric.
Measuring the pitch is more of an excercise than I was ready for so I'd go with Weskie on that.

Many screws come out a little under their nominal diameter. So, the measured "1.5mm" is probably M1.6, not least because M1.6 x 0.35 is a standard ISO thread.

If the original poster has a fasteners specialist supplier in their town, they'll probably be able to help. There is one local to me in Ipswich (on Boss Hall industrial estate for anyone who is over this way), and "1 screw" is usually the minimum over-the-counter order. The prices are usually very low.

At worst, if a brass or steel screw with a head can be bought, the head can be cut-off to produce a short bit of studding, and a small piecing saw used to cut a slot in the end for a straight screwdriver grub screw.
If working on small screws, holding them in a nut makes them easier to work on, and use shellac (French polish) to lock the thread if you struggle with the thread rotating. Shellac can be dissolved with meths and melts at about 70 centigrade, so very easy to dismantle any temporary fixing.

Sharman Wheels used to sell packets of M1.6 grub screws. I purchased such a packet from Precision Paints at a show sometime in the last few years. It might be worth giving them a ring to see if they have any left.

Another solution might be to drill out the existing hole in the gear a little and re-tap it for a BA or metric thread for a screw size that is readily available.

A 10 BA screw has a diameter of 0.067" and thread pitch of 72.6 TPI. This translates as 1.7mm diameter and 0.35mm thread pitch.

A 1.6mm ISO thread has a diameter of 1.6mm and a thread pitch of 0.35mm.

Eileen's sell M1.6 cheesehead screws that might be modified to make grub screws. However, they only sell brass ones, not steel.

Initial answer is no, Davall have not been agents for Portescap, but we may have used one of their motors with a gearbox designed by Davall.
If the gearbox is Portescap, then no.
