I am not sure about the best, but I think that Springside do make some, although some types appear to be a bit overscale to me. When i was looking for smaller ones, for side lamops on a brake van, I did ask the 2mm Scale Association but at that timne they did not do anything. The 3mm scale folks may have something. The alternative of course will be a master and some resin casting.

Thanks Terry

I also thought the springside ones looked a bit big but then i dont know. I only need the one so i might just make one (it doesnt need to work) but then i still dont know how big they should be!

There were a lot of different BR oil lamps -- loco lamps, plus WR variant, gauge glass lamps, flare lamps, rear lamps, guards lamps, signal lamps, platform lamps....... I've got a rear lamp I could measure for you if desired,

Sometimes the overscale look is because of the (cast) carrying handle. If it can be replaced by wire (0.33mm, maybe?), that would go a long way towards improvement.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Have a look in Guy Williams' book "The 4mm Engine" Wild Swan.

To further your knowledge, maybe? ;)

Is there anything in it relevant to hacking about D&E prototypes?

I have enough to cram into my little brain about 6 months in 1987! ;)

The 2 foot narrow gauge railway in Leighton Buzzard where I do some 12 inches to the foot modelling has a collection of tail lamps that are used for their intended purpose although I don't know off hand how many are ex BR (perhaps none) or if some are from the grouping period. Next time I go down I will check and have a measure of any that seem suitable.

The other alternative would be a quick trip to the nearest preserved line.

Also, if you follow that link to dcc concepts provided above there is a very clear picture which includes a ruler so you can work out the size.

I didn't say you had to own it. You must know someone locally who does. Anyway in the book Guy gives details on how to scratchbuild a lamp.

I have a few diesel books, but funnily enough no scratchbuilder guide to diesels.
