Class O4 Robinson ROD 2-8-0 3547 in LNER black
Just been advised from another group that the loco in the heading, part 31-005, is now available for £69 from Hattons.
Also spotted recently elsewhere, somebody bemoaning the lack of a finescale chassis for said locomotive.
I have long wanted one of these so I guess I do have an ulterior motive and could be persuaded to produce a chassis...
Any interest out there in GCR/LNER World?
John

Make that two.
I did ask Geoff at Comet Models via a PM on RM Web whether he had any plans to design and introduce an O4 chassis, but he decided not to dignify my enquiry with an answer
It was probably me. That's partly why I was looking for the inside motion parts recently, which you kindly assisted.

Yes,I would also like a chassis for same.
Thanks for bringing my attention to the loco at £69

...and if you do decide to design and produce a chassis, John, it may also be useful to design a corrected footplate to replace the Bachmann casting, of which the widened section over the cylinders carries on for far too long. Bachmann only corrected this on the GW/BR(WR)-liveried variant; all the others are still wrong.
Just a thought there...

More likely he has never seen the query. IMHO using the PM system is very hit and miss, many people never look at their PM inbox. Better to use email which has a much better chance of being read.

Hardly. More like Hattons are just clearing the decks to make room for new stuff. I got a cheap Hornby B1 that way.

Certainly some interest in GWR world. The Bachmann loco a nice model as far as it goes but that flat expanse of billiard table between the frames is a bit of a let down that needs correcting..

Having got most of the way to a simple Gibson wheel replacement (a la Mr Hall), I have just checked the diameter of the Gibson axles - 2.94mm - I then checked the apertures in the Bachmann chassis and found them to all be around 3.11mm. Somehow I don't think this "simple" conversion is going to work too well unless I open out the slots to 3.175mm for a 1/8th inch axle and make an equivalent adjustment to the Gibson wheels. If John is prepared to produce it, I guess I, too, would be interested in a complete replacement chassis kit incorporating some form of suspension.

Re: Class O4 Robinson ROD 2-8-0 3547 in LNER black
I have not noticed any undue slop in the chassis slots of the Bachmann ROD I did a while back and I have to say that it has been the smoothest runner of any Bachmann engine I've yet converted. The two further examples I have here in 00 are just as smooth and I expect no problems either. It was also the first Bachmann engine (of the particular prototypes I've handled) where I've not had to correct a mis-match between coupling rods and axle slots.
I would counsel caution here in trying to take up too much of the inbuilt clearances on these proprietary chassis. It should not be a problem - they are designed to work with fairly large tolerances - which is probably why they work in 00 when the chassis doesn't (sometimes) match the coupling rods. I usually check the correlation, correct where necessary, but then remove some of the slop by opening up previously bushed rods to my standard 1.6mm on a 1.5mm crankpin. This 'slop' is also why we are able to get away with a rigid proprietary chassis with our fine flanges, where previously we could only consider suspended engines. Opening up the chassis slots is a ticklish business and needs great care - and you'll then certainly need to check that the rod centres match. I agree 3.11mm seems a bit much but I'd always try the conversion first. When I get the next one apart I'll have a measure of the slots.
I have often found that Gibson axles are a trifle skinny as David says, but I've just measured those for the next ROD and they are 2.97mm, so maybe David had some oddballs. If necessary I turn up some new ones from some 2.98mm axle steel I have, something I occasionally have to do if the Gibson ones are too short, which sometimes happens.
I'll not deny, though, that a chassis from John is a very nice prospect should you feel the need.

Timely postings. I saw Hattons were flogging them off and one is on it's way to me now. I rarely buy Bachmann stuff new and never full price. They have let me down too many times in the past. Still an O4 in P4 should be nice to go with the B1's, N4, N2, J94, J52 and J50. I thought I was modelling BR (LMR)? I wonder if O4's ever ran up to Smithywood from Darnall?
Ordsall Road (BR(E)), Forge Mill Sidings (BR(M)), Kirkcliffe Coking Plant (BR(E)), Swanage (BR (S)) and Heaby (LMS/MR). Acquired Thorneywood (GNR). Still trying to "Keep the Balance".

And of course of particular interest to me are
http://www.britishrailways1960.co.uk/WLNCNDJ5.html
http://www.britishrailways1960.co.uk/WLNCH03.html
Although I very much doubt if the 04s ever got to the old Buckley line, although Robinson's max recommended speed for the 04s of 20mph was far too fast down to CQ Docks!

They apparently worked up to 40mph with little ill-effect.

When you have sorted the O4 you may like to start on this http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/61730-bachmann-d112-review-by-tony-wright/page__fromsearch__1

Just to reassure modellers who have expressed an interest in an 04 finescale chassis - the plans are in progress.
For this engine I will be a customer for the kit and not the designer - which frees up my time for the next locomotive on my list.
I hope that more information will follow in about 2 weeks time ...
