GWR Wagon Books

Postby Winander » Sat Feb 03, 2024 4:26 pm

I seek the advice of GWR modellers. The new GWR Goods Wagon book by Atkins, Beard, and Tourret is usually offered on ebay at silly money - someone is asking £111.99.

The older two volume set by Atkins, Beard, Hyde, and Tourret is much more reasonably priced.

Is the difference considerable?

There is a considerable difference in content, with substantially more info in the newer book, with over double the pages and many drawings.

There's also a new-new version, with a white cover. I think its a revised edition, not just a reprinting of the single volume brown cover one. Came out about 10 years ago I think.

ABE Books has the larger book, 2 copies at £100 & £115, so it is clearly a valuable item. Mine cost £35 second hand a few years ago!

The first edition is the two part version, shown in the lower photo on the original post.
The second edition contains these two parts combined in one volume, without significant alterations.
The third edition is the very much thicker, updated and revised, single volume, with a shorter title and lots of additional information, as commented below, and is shown in the upper photo on the original post. Unsurprisingly it is by far the most sought after.
All these have grey dust covers; the white one is, so far as I know, just a reprint of the third edition, but I'm open to correction.
Regards
Noel

Seems there is the new new one, published in 2013 by OPC

And a new old one published by David & Charles in 1986 that was vols 1&2 combined

The latest edition of the book is a white cover book which is the 3rd edition which was published in 2013.

As stated in the page before the contents list; the first edition was in 2 volumes published by Tourret in 1975 and 1976. Tourret then published a combined edition in 1986. A completly revised edition was then published, again buy Tourret in 1998. The 'current' third edition was published by OPC in 2013.
