GW rivet press instructions

Postby nberrington » Thu Mar 09, 2023 3:08 pm

I see the manufacturers instructions are gradually being posted.
I have a GE rivet press, and have always used it on the fly (intuition ,etc)
There are likely features I am not using. Can anyone help with instructions for the gizmo?

The facility that I find most useful isn't mentioned in the instructions. With a bit of care (coping with the inevitable gear backlash) it can be used for accurate marking out - at least for smallish pieces of metal or plastic.

Hi Neil,

There is an article on using the GW tool by that nice Mr Hall of this parish in MRJ 103 p142 that may be helpful.

Cheers,

David

... and lots of discussion on the virtual group meetings on how to get the tool to do what it's supposed to do.

Two annoying aspects of making adjustments is that cap screws requiring an allen key are used for adjusting the depth stop and the anvil holder. To access the anvil holder you have to wind the carriage all the way out because the lead screw obstructs the cap screw head. Both adjusting screws would be better as hex headed bolts that you can use a spanner on as they are impossible to easily access with allen keys. The depth stop is M6 and the anvil holder is M4.

It was the trigonometry in the first photo above that frightened me when I did the review. I solved that one by passing it to Peter Swift who understood these things. He produced a very nice smokebox door for the LSWR 700 kit I never built and sold a few months ago!

Thanks to James I now have the instructions again…

I used Excel to plot the x and y co-ordinates for the circle of rivets around the smokebox door on my H class model (Snooze 229).

Spreadsheet attached that may help. Two parts, firstly a circular array and secondly the diagonal of a rectangle.
Input circle diameter and number of rivets or rectangle lengths and number of rivets.
The sheets calculate the dial readouts as coordinates and also the movement between successive rivets.

Paul Willis produced some videos showing his experiences with the GW Rivet Tool that may be of use?

The first one covers ‘Features’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcGKLwl ... WzHPl1opBv

The second on covers ‘Use’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I31-Xa ... Bv&index=2

The videos play after the adverts.
