Di-limonene supplier in UK?

Postby essdee » Mon Dec 07, 2020 9:25 pm

'Evening all,
I have just added Plastic Weld to an order from Squires - and it reminded me that I wanted to try Di-limonene. But it is not in their catalogue, so I wonder if someone could point me to a UK supplier please (that is, assuming solvents are to be had under present conditions?).
Many thanks,

Steve

I got mine from Hobby Holidays and it appears to still be available there. (usual disclaimers).

Hi Steve,

Yup, eBay is a good source, mostly commonly sold under the term Orange Terpene. It's also a good source for MEK/Butanone in litres or bigger at a fraction of the price - less aggressive than Plastic Weld if I remember correctly.

Many thanks gents,

I will get some in. Lindsay, yes, I had thought that its less-aggressive nature would be a handy factor.
The carriages I have unearthed were last worked on around, oh - about 1987?!

Cheers,

I was surprised to see MEK so easily available, and post free! I am surprised they are allowed to send it through the post these days.

They aren't!
It is delivered by Courier, who probably don't care about the safety of their contract deliveres.r

I got mine from here https://www.magnacol.co.uk/search/for/d-limonene/, got the 1 litre bottle a long time ago, bit cheaper then but it will last me forever.

I bought a bottle a while ago from Andrew Hartshorne, Wizard Models. I could not find it on a search of his website, but it might be worth asking.

Limonene I find useful for jobs where you don't want the solvent to evaporate quickly. It seems to stay 'fluid' a lot longer than butanone etc. I got mine from Hobby Holidays back in the good old days when you could buy direct from them at an exhibition.

Remember exhibitions..................? ;)

Limonene is still listed on the Hobby Holidays website https://www.hobbyholidays.co.uk/proddet ... d=LIMONENE. The cost of a courier may make it impractical to order unless it is part of a larger consignment.

It will be (much) more expensive and in smaller quantities than 'industrial' supplies, but for anyone really struggling with distance shopping or courier deliveries (a very sore point in these remote parts!) any model shop is likely to stock it disguised as Tamiya, Gunze or Mr Hobby plastic kit cement/pens. For Tamiya it's the Orange bottle, described as ultra-thin. The Green (thin) is not, I believe, limonene, although it is a lot less aggressive towards painted surfaces than the 'thick' (white bottle) variety.
