Bogie kit

Postby jim s-w » Thu Feb 02, 2017 7:46 pm

Hi all

I'm toying with the idea of using a coach bogie as a wagon load. Does anyone do a scale one that looks like a real bogie with all the internal gubbings?

Cheers

Probably the best thing you can do many a cast metal bogie kit.

Peter Chatham's later PC LNWR kits (the ones in the bubble packaging) had etched bogies with a lot of detail.

Unfortunately now only available occasionally on various online auction sites.

Something about in the late 50s, stanier or br1 perhaps but open to suggestions. I had a look on your site but couldn't see any Bill.

Years ago I built a coopercraft mk1 and remember those bogies being pretty detailed but it might be my memory playing tricks. I've no idea what happened to it

One of the current Hornby passenger vehicle ones maybe? The Maunsell and Stanier ones in particular seem to have a lot of internal detail. Although on your Lowmac maybe a couple of freight bogies would look nice, diamond frame short wheelbase perhaps?

A Lowmac is possibly not the most likely vehicle, there being no need for the dropped floor for such a load. A pair of SWB freight bogies should fit quite neatly across a standard Highfit.

Pay no attention, Jim, take Jol's suggestion and build a PC bogie (I've looked at the instructions and they terrify me - a step by step build by an expert might just drag me out of my bunker). But if you must follow the 'mac' bit of the Lowmac with a machinery load, I wonder if this one would tickle your fancy?

The two Lowmacs linked to in previous posts were both coded to show that they were in use by the engineers, not in commercial traffic. The photographs are dated 1982, by which time the rules had changed: BR were no longer common carriers, wagon load traffic had largely disappeared and Speedlink was losing money and soon to disappear as well. The operating environment was very different from that of the late 1950s; BR's wagon numbers only slipped below 1,000,000 during 1959.
