28mm pinpoint axles

Postby junctionmad » Mon Feb 15, 2016 11:42 pm

Does anyone know a supplier of 28mm pinpoint axles and associated wagon wheels. ( mostly either spoke or 3-hole , some disc ) preferably with the wheels off the axles. It's not a p4 requirement so coarser profiles are acceptable ( EM or better )

Since I need delivery this century , I'm avoiding ultra scale

Thanks

Dave

Ultrascale aren't always that bad. Since axles are invariably produced all the time, they can run off a set of Irish axles - as they did for me - in under a fortnight.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Are they on the Stores list? I didn't spot them.

28mm is the standard axle length for S Scale, so Alan Gibson should be the first place to look.

That's rather short for the usual 6'6" between journal centres, should be 31mm to get the pipoints at the journal centres. Equivalent to the 26mm for 4mm.

They used to be but I gave up asking for them at successive Scalefora. Thankfully when they were in stock many years back I bought a lot. I did ask Alan Gibson direct when he ran the business (who I think had supplied them) about 28mm but was told it would require a massive quantity run to be viable.

I've made my own to special lengths in the past but wonder if anyone has approached Romford's direct to see if they will consider?

The bodgit method - cut a 26mm axle in half and sleeve with 2mm bore thin wall brass tube also works well!

if you are prepared to do a bit of work, then the 1mm pinpoint axles for the exactoscale wheels can be cut in two and rejoined with a brass 1mm id tube replacing the original plastic axle centre. You can then set the axle length and the back to back to whatever value you want.
I have done this in the opposite way, shrtening the axles for narrow gauge, works just fine.

Think I'll stick with Ultrascale for Irish axles. At least I know what I'm getting, rather than what others think might be available (which it may not be).
That would be an ecumenical matter.
