I like that John.

There is a trick that some of the magazine photographers use that will help with views like this too to give a better depth of field. Many digital cameras have a setting that takes a series of photographs with slightly different focuses. Photoshop then has a setting that takes the "in focus" sections from each of the shots and blend this into the single image that all looks to be in focus.

I am not quite sure how it is done, and obviously the camera needs to be on a tripod, but if any of the viewers know, can they share it here as it would be a useful trick!

Cheers Mark,

It was taken using an iPhone 4 with the phone positioned so the lens was as close to the base so not much in way of adjustment available :D

John, that is a wonderful photograph, and the fact that it was taken on a phone is quite remarkable. The slight graininess only adds to the effect.

I believe there are a number of software packages available that will do what Mark speaks of; I think Helicon is one. But I am going to take friendly issue here with him, in that I think that the fashion of combining images to produce truly staggering depth of field actually sometimes has the effect of making our models look less lifelike. Likewise the fantastic sharpness of the images in many of our magazines. Some of my favourite photographs taken over the years for MRJ were not in fact very sharp, but had a misty atmosphere which seemed to fool the eye in suggesting reality. Limitations of depth of field, even with a 28mm lens stopped down, meant that foregrounds were out of focus, which led the eye into the picture in exactly the way that John's picture does. I came upon this by accident, not design, and exploited it thereafter. Barry Norman did the same, and we both still do!

Full circle, see the very first post on this thread which is just such a photo so you can judge for your selves.

....splendid images Jim....BNS wasn't a haunt for me back in the 80s....but from the memories that I have, you've done a great job in capturing the feel of the place.

Thanks Howard. Going to concentrate on getting this one finished as I appear to talked myself into exhibiting at S4N next year :)

In the meantime I will keep reading your track construction threads as I'm going to have a lot of point work to build...

As I was tidying up I left a pack of LED's lying on the layout and purely by chance it illuminated the signal. Thinking it looked quite nice I took the image below - I'd like to claim it was carefully planned but nope - this was just lucky!
