Re: How real do your photo's look?
Hi,
There are still a number of Highland Stations where steps of various size are used for access to trains. While on holiday in the Far North earlier in the year I noticed they were in use at Fearn, Lairg and Kildonan.
Great pictures Mark.

Yes they are, although they probably shouldn't be red - one more job for me to do!
A feature of these lines until very recently (the last 10 years really) was very low platforms - in Highland days, all carriages had an extra step board to accomodate this. If you go up to the exHR lines now you will notice that the handrails to the footbridges seem to start at a very low level and a little bit proud of the first step - this is merely that the ground has been built up and over the first couple of treads of the stairs!
I have done my platforms at 1'10" and this might even be a little high! All sorts of boxes and steps were provided to allow the passenger get into the carriage - I intend to do one or two of the other types that I have seen.[/quote]
Just another little thing that evokes the location and period so perfectly. I remember them also on ex GNSR lines, but they certainly weren't red. They needed station staff to put them in the right places.
I remember travelling to Fraserburgh on Hogmanay 1961 (I think) in a blizzard. We stopped at a passing station where only one road through the station had been ploughed. The snow was up to the footboards on both sides, and the only indication of which side the platform was on was a row of steps waiting for us. Oh that Scotrail could cope with the snow as well as BR (Sc)!

Hi
I've read 'somewhere' that there is software available (free - wonderful word) that will slice the best parts of several pictures together -taken on different F settings, to give a better depth of picture...anyone know what's its called?
regards
Mike

And was used to create the very first photo in this topic.
I'm sorry the link on this post was to a clip which has been withdrawn from Youtube and rather destroy the purpose of the post.

To be honest, Jim, I think you've left everyone else standing!
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Hi Jim,
Part of it might be that there are really three elements that come together:
- a decent model
- a believable layout to set it in
- the photographic skills to capture it.
I'd like to think that I have the first, I can do the second if I drag the layout out from behind the motorbikes at the back of the garage, but I have no hope at all of the third!
I'll keep working on it, but it's a challenge!

Flymo we know from your thread that the skills are there... how about moving the bikes and draging the layout out for a whirl. That way we can all learn what needs to be set up on the cameras! I need to learn for Scalefourum!
Even I could drag out an old layout for a try....

Hmm, regarding photographic skills - take enough shots and eventually you will find one or two that look OK, and then "shop" them...
Anyway, here is something from the 1930's, before colour was invented...

Just needs a small group debating whether they can fix it themselves or need to send for the breakdown crew...........

I do plan to redo my site at some point and bring it up to date. I took this picture to use as a background image but I quite like it on its own
