Another simple soldering question...

Postby John Donnelly » Thu Aug 30, 2018 3:37 pm

Apologies for what is yet another simple soldering question...

I'm now at the point where I'm trying to add the lamp irons to ES1. The surface available for the solder is only around 2mm * 1mm (if that) and I'm having a hell of job holding the lamp irons in place while trying to solder them even if I tin the surface first...

I guess this would be a perfect job for a resistance solder iron but I don't have one so any tips for holding very small parts in place whilst soldering?

John, before I bought my RSU, for such small items as lamp irons I would cut the pointed end off a cocktail stick, drill a hole just under size up the stick, push the component into the hole and solder. Hope that helps.

Have you got any ceramic tipped tweezers. They don’t draw rather heat away. Another option is a tiny but of blue tac to hold it.

Depends a lot on the type of lamp iron your trying to fit.

The simple Z bent surface mounted type (top) is a bit inclined to peal off now mater how well soldered on.
I prefer to cheat and mount it as shown below and add the surface return as a separate item. It is also much easier to get them in the right place.

Thanks gents.

Will, it's a simple L shape fitted to the footplate.

At the risk of being accused of using rude words, have you thought about glue?

If you have a jeweller's screwdriver that you no longer want to use as a screwdriver, it makes quite a good probe to press down small, flat parts. A pound shop will sell you a set of truly awful screwdrivers that you can "waste" without damage to your soul. You could even file profiles in them to hold specific parts.

Same approach still applies shurely? The vertical element soldered solidly through a hole in the footplate and the base of the L applied cosmeticly.

Yes, I have and may well resort to it.
