The plan was for six of us to meet up at Bob Hetherington's house in Skinburness on the Solway coast.
As ever with the best laid plans something went wrong. In this case Ian's car broke down a few miles short of the venue, having travelled all the way from Yorkshire. A recovery vehicle turned up and took him and his car to Carlisle for repair. Ron, who was with him, was dropped off at the station to make his own way back to Yorkshire. The car was diagnosed as needing a new water pump which could not be delivered until the next day so Ian had to be dropped off at the station to make his way back to Yorkshire. Unfortunately due to bad advertising by the railway company he missed a connection in the wilds of Cumbria at Garsdale resulting in him having to take a very expensive taxi home. To make matters worse he had to return to Carlisle the following day to collect his car. As he says two days of his life wasted. There was a good ending to the saga though. The garage that maintains his car in Darlington paid the full repair costs for him! That is what I call good service.
Meanwhile back at Skinburness the four remaining Cragies, Bob, Chris, Dave and Philip, adjourned to the Golf Club in Silloth for an excellent lunch and pint or two of locally brewed Real Ale! You can see the brewery from the club!
We made it back to Bob's and Garrigill was powered up and the brakedown crane was run out in honour of trying to rescue Ian and Ron!
Further trains were run up and down what is a really beautiful layout with exquisite handbuilt Stockton and Darlington stock. Many of you will have seen examples of his work on Burntisland as well. He is one of the far flung members of the group that help with the layout and he hopes to be at Wigan MRE in October to help out.
Following an enjoyable operating session, with only a couple of minor problems, caused by the baseboards warping with age, we adjourned outside to sample the delights of the ozone enriched air that the North British Railway used to advertise the delights of the area as a holiday destination. Sitting around in the sun drinking tea, eating scones the world of model railways was put to rights thus ending another enjoyable meeting.
