Glevum Area Group Meeting March 2010

Last night we met at Robin Whittl'es where we were able to see the latest progress on Robin's spectacular new layout Barrow Road. There was an excellent turn out and superb evening was had by all.

An impressive work in progress.

I have often wondered about the detail of hoist mechanisms for Coaling and ash plant; has the Group got any ISBN reference(s) for published material on the subject please?

The coal tower was made for me by Peter Leyland. I provided a set of prototype photos and drawings found in an article by Donald Flook in Brill Summer Special Number 8. The drawing is of a No 2 Coaling Plant which is not exactly the same as that at Barrow Road - the cowl over the hoist is a different shape, but more importantly the hoist arrangement is different. In the drawing the counter balance weights reach the ground and workers are protected from it by a 'shielded container'. The counter balance on the Barrow Road Coal Plant is different and I am still unclear about it's operation.
Both versions have a large electric motor and a pair of pulley drums situated in the winding house at the top of the tower. This is removable on my model so I can fit a motor and winding mechanism at a later date.
What I do know is the hoist is lifted on steel cables by the electric motor to a point under the cowl and a bar clamps over the top of the wagon as it tips and discharges it's contents. There is a point where the hoist guide wheels stop at the top of the guide and the whole platform moves outwards in order to tip the wagon. Does anyone have any information on exactly how this works please?
One further point - how is the wagon held onto the hoist - surely not just by the brakes?
