31st January and 1st February Weekend

Postby Lindsay G » Tue Feb 03, 2015 6:48 pm

Our first meeting of the year took place on Saturday 31st January with a Show & Tell. In front of a very healthy turnout, 11 members talked everyone through what they’d been up to with items ranging in size from Norwegian coaches in Scale7 to naval vessels in 1:700 (perhaps not surprisingly, no-one had a powerful enough magnifying lamp to examine the sailors produced in etched brass and 3d printed for the latter. I kid you not!!). Between these extremes, the remaining items on display were of a more familiar scale and gauge including several statics for the latest extensions to Burntisland 1883, and stock of North British, Caledonian, Highland, BR and Wemyss Private Railway vintage.

Above, Ray Nolton has laid before him the miniature naval ships, the start of another brigantine for Burntisland 1883, and a rake of partially completed HR NPCS & vans.

Here, Ian Terrell has on display some part-built NBR locos from his own etchings and (too small to see in the image) a selection of point levers and ground frames. At bottom left, the small white structure next to the mineral wagon is a very narrow housing for weighbridge machinery for Burntisland 1883. We only have a couple of images of this intriguing structure – has anyone ever come across the likes elsewhere? This is the prototype :

Since we don’t have clubrooms, the hall was booked for the weekend and the opportunity taken to progress the extensions to the layout. The following images may not exhibit much advance from what appeared in a previous post but give an idea of the changes compared to what existed previously.

At the Engine Works, progress has been made since the last meeting with most of the trackwork completed in board-width sections. Over the weekend the mock-ups were progressed somewhat, droppers added to some track sections, and a sizeable area of baseboard removed to insert the roundhouse. The alignment of track to the turntable/fiddle yard, seen at the far end, reflects that unfortunately this is no plug and play venture :

At the West Dock, track building took place and the backscene boards cut and mostly fitted - not that you can tell from the image. Actually, if you consider the industry exhibited by the members photographed, it’s a wonder that anything progressed over the weekend! It’s also a pity that we couldn’t manage to get the sea levels to match :
