Single slip prototype photos?
Hello I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of prototype photos of a single slip (bullhead) to see what the chairing detail as per this Exactoscale diagram looks like in real life?
The resources section of the website doesn't show what I'm after here. Thanks if anyone can help.

Many thanks Tim. Probably a trick of the light, the checkrails are almost as shiny as the running rails. Interesting that there's a small slight curve where the point (? correct term) rails in the diamond are planed to match the crossing angle. Wear, I suppose? (Not that it's relevant to filing the model rail!)

No curve there that I can see, do you mean the blunt nose on the point rail, done for the same reason its done on a normal vee, so the rail end is strong enough where the wheel first runs onto it. Applies to models as well, you don't want a knife edge there.

I think there's a curve here, Keith?
Actually I think there's a curve on the running side of the rail too. Just the problem I had trying to file the model rail. Should the nose be slightly rounded as well as blunted on the model?

Re: Single slip prototype photos?
Should the point rail be cut or planed at an angle on a straight (or slightly curved in this case?) rail or be bent and filed back as though it was part of a vee without its other vee part? I've been reading the Digests and track topics but haven't yet found explicit reference to this.
Many thanks
Andrew

The latter, ie you need the web at the point to get maximum strength when the wheel first runs onto it. The model won't need that strength so it depends how fussy you want to be.
Can' remember now what I did and its very hard to see once its built.
And I still can't see any curve in the point rails in that photo, there looks to be a bit of flange wear on the nose.

That answers my question thanks Keith
Hi Andrew -
Just filed up 4th blade. Don't know if this is the pukka way but I might as well try to help!
Bend rail to angle required. This will be the running side of the rail. File down till it looks straight again.
It looks like this
Turn over. This will be the angled non running side.
File this down maintaining the angle.
The tip will now be too thin for any strength. But phone camera too duff to show properly
Emery back till it's strong enough (matter of taste?!) Theoretically 0.25mm I think but DaveB recommends as thin as you can get away with (see concurrent Masokits thread)

Thanks Keith and Julian,
The replies really help. I enjoy the theoretical discussions as well as the practical help. Photographs are such excellent help, thank you both - photos in both of your archival threads are such a help in working out what to do. And HB and MW and TW and others who are repeatedly helpful.
Thanks

Hi Julian.
I have been searching my photo collection for pictures of single slips, but have not found the close up picture I was looking for.
However I have found this one which may help with the chairing detail of the K crossings. I am still getting all the pictures together for my slips write up, but you will probably have done yours before I get there.
Regards
Tony.

That's a great pic, I wouldn't want to be maintaining the point rodding there!.

Whyever not? Seems like it'd be steady work, definitely safe from layoffs. And, unlike some such jobs, no constant travel to a different job site every week.

Re: Single slip prototype photos?
In these days of 'rationalised' track layouts, its fascinating to see these old formations where just about every conceivable move is catered for. I'm intrigued by the K crossing nearest the chap in the hat, it may be a trick of the light, but there seems to be almost no clearance in the flangeway between the K checkrail and the adjacent planed rail, would this short section be moveable via the linkage to make a smoother transition?

Hi Steve.
I think what you are looking at is just a trick of the light and the back edge of the planed rail is lost against the top of the spacer block, which would be firmly bolted in position. Incidentally if anyone is wondering the location was Liverpool Street Station in GER days.
There is certainly an awful lot of point rodding about and there appear to be signal wires on top of the large rodding run as well.
Regards
Tony.

The GER was certainly not afraid of complicated pointwork. Small wayside station goods yard design generals centred on a double slip. David Barham evocation of Clare on here being a fine example

Really useful pic there Tony, thanks for posting. Maybe should be copied into the P4 resources photo section?
